The Schipperke [pronunciation: ˈsxɪpərkə ] is a Belgian breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 83 ).
description
The Schipperke (in Flemish meaning small shepherd dog) has a hard, shiny, thick top coat with a dense undercoat that is easy to care for. It is longer on the neck and hind paws ( collar and trousers ). The color is black with no markings. The Schipperke has a short straight, strong back and its neck is broad and long. The tail is set high, preferably drooping when at rest, raised when moving, but is sometimes partially or completely absent ( brachyuria ). His broad fox face, his dark brown, almond-shaped little eyes and the high set triangular, extremely flexible erect ears lead to a watchful expression. The Schipperke is a sporty dog and should find appropriate housing conditions.
Origin and Distribution
Originally from Flanders , it was bred in Belgium and Holland. The Belgian Queen Marie Henriette acquired a Schipperke at an exhibition in Brussels in 1885 , this led to the rapid spread of the breed and it became very popular. The breed standard has existed since 1888.
Type
Pied Piper, Boat, Guard and Family Dog
Essence
The Schipperke, as he should be according to the breed standard, is bright and always in action. He is reserved towards strangers. He is eager to learn, lively and curious. As a watchdog, he reports excellently, that is, he barks when something conspicuous from his point of view happens. He also defends things he guards.
Diseases typical of the breed
There is a breed disposition for mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIb .
