The Documentary ( English for " documentation ") is the debut album of American rapper The Game . It was released on January 18, 2005 on the labels G-Unit -Records and Aftermath Entertainment .

The album is assigned to the genres gangsta rap and west coast hip hop . The Game mostly raps about growing up and his experiences in Compton .

Production and samples

Many different producers were involved in the production of the album, with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent acted as executive producers . Dr. Dre produced the beats for the songs Intro (with Che Vicious), Higher (with Mark Batson), How We Do and Don't Worry (both with Mike Elizondo ). He produced Westside Story and Start from Scratch in collaboration with Scott Storch . Just Blaze created the instrumentals for Church for Thugs and No More Fun and Games , while Kanye West produced the track Dreams . The beat for Hate It or Love It was produced by the duo Cool & Dre , Don't Need Your Love was produced by Havoc and the instrumental for Put You on the Game was created by Timbaland . Jeff Bhasker is responsible for the production of the song The Documentary , while Hi-Tek produced the song Runnin ' . Eminem created the beat for We Ain't and Focus produced Where I'm From . In addition, the beats for Special by Needlz and for Like Father, Like Son by Buckwild.

Nine songs on the sound carrier contain elements from songs by other artists. Parts of Down into the Magic by Donald Kerr were used for the intro , while the song No Money Down by Jerry Butler was sampled on Dreams . Hate It or Love It samples the track Rubber Band by The Trammps and Don't Need Your Love contains elements of the song Not Gon Cry by Mary J. Blige . The song No More Fun and Games used parts of the title Gangsta, Gangsta by NWA , while We Ain't samples of the songs The Watcher by Dr. Dre , One Day at a Time by Tupac Shakur, and Patiently Waiting by 50 Cent . In addition, Where I'm From samples the track Amanda by Dionne Warwick , Special the track Catherine Howard by Rick Wakeman and Like Father, Like Son the song Mariya by The Family Circle.

Guest Posts

Guest contributions by other artists are included on eleven songs on the album. The rapper 50 Cent appears on the songs Westside Story , Hate It or Love It and How We Do , Eminem can be heard on the track We Ain't and Nate Dogg can be heard on the tracks Where I'm From and Special . Mary J. Blige sings the chorus of Don't Worry while Faith Evans sings the chorus of Don't Need Your Love . In addition, Marsha Ambrosius in from Scratch Start to hear. Runnin ' is a collaboration with the artists Tony Yayo and Dion and the rapper Busta Rhymes supports The Game on the song Like Father, Like Son .

Chart successes and singles

In Germany, The Documentary entered the charts at number 46 in the 6th calendar week of 2005 and was able to reach the top position in the following weeks with number 11. In total, the album stayed in the German Top 100 for 25 weeks. The sound carrier entered the US charts at number 1 in the first week of sales and was among the best-selling albums there for 35 weeks. In the German annual charts in 2005, the album was ranked 75th.

The songs Westside Story , How We Do , Hate It or Love It , Higher , Dreams and Put You on the Game were released as singles.

Sales figures and awards

The album sold 586,000 copies in the first week after its release in the US alone. To date, over two million copies of the sound carrier have been sold in the United States, for which it has been awarded double platinum . Worldwide sales amount to over five million copies.

The Documentary received mostly positive reviews from critics. The side Metacritic calculated from 19 Reviews of English-language media is a section of 72%.

Stefan Johannesberg from laut.de rated the album with three out of a possible five points. Opinions would continue to divide about The Game as to whether it was just a “ 50 Cent clone or the savior of West Coast Rap”. While the singles Hate It or Love It and How We Do are positively highlighted, on other songs he would be "lyrically beaten by his guests."
