Dorothea Katherine Lambert Chambers (born September 3, 1878 in Ealing , England as Dorothea Douglass , † January 7, 1960 in Kensington ) was an English tennis and badminton player .

Career

In 1900 Dorothea Douglass played for the first time on Church Road. She won the women's singles at Wimbledon seven times between 1903 and 1914 and was in a total of 11 individual finals. At the age of 41 she was the oldest player in a women's singles final up to that point. In addition, she won the gold medal in the individual lawn competition at the London Olympics in 1908 .

The era of Dorothea Douglass came to an end in 1919 when, at the age of 40, she lost in the final against the young Suzanne Lenglen with 10: 8, 4: 6 and 7: 9. When the score was 6: 5 in the third set, Douglass already had a match point , which she could not use. The 44 games Lenglen needed to win marked the longest women's final until the 1970s, when Margaret Smith Court beat Billie Jean King 14:12 and 11: 9. In 1920 Douglass returned once more to Wimbledon; but after she failed again in the final, she announced her resignation for the individual competition. She played in doubles until 1927. From 1924 to 1926 Douglass was the captain of the British team in the Wightman Cup . After 1928 she worked as a trainer.

She was also a successful badminton player, winning All England doubles in 1903 and mixed in 1904.

Dorothy Douglass died in Kensington, London in 1960.

In 1981 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of International Tennis.
