Alexis Kerry Ohanian (born April 24, 1983 in New York City ) is an American entrepreneur and investor . He is best known as co-founder of the social news - aggregator Reddit . He was its chairman until June 5, 2020. He resigned as a political statement, in the context of the protests about the death of George Floyd , from this office in order to be filled with a black successor. He also co-founded the venture capital investment fund Initialized Capital , helped launch the Hipmunk travel website, and founded the Breadpig website . He's a multimillionaire .

Life

Ohanian was born in Brooklyn to a German- born mother, Anke (birth name Anke Prigge), and a father of Armenian descent, Chris Ohanian. Chris' grandparents came to the US as refugees after the Armenian genocide . After graduating from the University of Virginia , he co-founded reddit.com with Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz in 2005. Huffman and Ohanian sold Reddit in October 2006 to the media company Condé Nast Publications for a price between 10 and 20 million US dollars. Ohanian continued to work for Reddit as a member of the board of directors . In 2010 he also founded the investment fund Initialized Capital, which specializes in investments in start-up companies. He returned full-time to Reddit on July 10, 2015 with co-founder Huffman to lead the now independent company. He resigned in February 2018 to focus on investing again. He also appeared several times as a public activist for net neutrality and a free Internet.

He is the author of the book Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed which was published in 2013. In 2010 he worked for a microfinance project in Armenia for several months .

Private

On December 29, 2016, Ohanian got engaged to tennis player Serena Williams . Their daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. was born on September 1, 2017. Ohanian and Williams were married in New Orleans on November 16, 2017 . He lives with his family in West Palm Beach , Florida .
