Aljaž Bedene (born July 18, 1989 in Ljubljana ) is a British - Slovenian tennis player . After playing for Great Britain in the meantime, he has been playing under the Slovenian flag again since 2018.

Life

Bedene was born and lived in Ljubljana before moving to Welwyn Garden City in the UK in 2008 . He has a twin brother who also played tennis (highest world ranking 840). Since March 31, 2015, he has also had British citizenship. He married in 2016 and then moved to Ljubljana.

Career

Bedene was active and successful mainly on the Challenger Tour until 2012 . So far, he has won six singles titles and another doubles. Bedene has been on the World Tour more and more since 2013 . With his recent successes on the Challenger Tour and his first successes on the Main Tour, he was able to work his way up to his best position in the world rankings with 71st place. He achieved his best results so far when he made it to the quarter-finals in Vienna 2012 and the semi-finals in Chennai 2013 .

Two years later he made his first final on the World Tour in Chennai . In the final he was defeated by Stan Wawrinka . He reached his second final in the 2017 season in Budapest , where he lost to Lucas Pouille .

After playing for Great Britain for three years, Bedene played again under the Slovenian flag on January 1, 2018. He justified this step by stating that he was again eligible to play for the Davis Cup and the Olympic Games . Despite his nationality, the ITF had refused him to play for Great Britain in the Davis Cup , as he had already played in three games for Slovenia , in which he only played matches that were no longer relevant to the outcome of the game.
