Mattias Falck (* 7. September 1991 as Mattias Karlsson ) is a Swedish table tennis - national team . He became in 2019 Vice World Champion in singles, won 2018 World Cup bronze with the team and in double with Kristian Karlsson at European Championships several silver and bronze medals.

Career

Mattias Karlsson achieved greater successes at the beginning of his career, especially in doubles, together with Robert Svensson he reached the quarter-finals at his first European championship in 2010 and the round of 32 at his first world championship the following year . He also won his first win that year on the Pro Tour when he won the Polish Open in doubles with Svensson.

From 2012 he competed with Kristian Karlsson , at whose side he won silver at the European Championships in 2012 and qualified for the Pro Tour Grand Finals. The duo also performed well at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships by reaching the round of 16. As a single player, Mattias Karlsson had not yet achieved any great success, but in September 2015 he was already 106th in the world rankings . This month he beat world number 14 at the Austrian Open. Jung Young-sik and was among the last 32 at the European Championships , so that he moved up to 74th place in the world rankings and thus for the first time into the top 100. At the Polish Open in October, he not only won gold in doubles with Kristian Karlsson - making him the first Swede with two Pro Tour double titles - but also beat the Chinese world number 13 among other things. Yan An , so that he made another big leap to 53rd place in the world rankings. In 2016, he was part of the Swedish team at the World Cup and the Olympic Games , which reached the quarter-finals and then lost to China and South Korea. In the 2016/17 season he played for the French first division club AS Pontoise-Cergy TT , with whom he reached the Champions League semi-finals .

At the 2016 Individual European Championships , he played in all three competitions. In the singles he was eliminated early on against the Olympian Vladimir Samsonov , in the doubles he won bronze with Kristian Karlsson, in the mixed he lost the final against Matilda Ekholm against the married couple João Monteiro / Daniela Dodean-Monteiro after a 2-0 lead still with 2: 3 and thus took silver. At the Swedish Open in November he defeated the top 20 players Kōki Niwa and Dimitrij Ovtcharov , so that he was finally able to win silver - his first individual medal on the World Tour. After the Qatar Open in February 2017, at which he beat Vladimir Samsonov, among others, he reached a new record in the world rankings with 24th place, becoming the best-placed Swedish player for the first time. At the 2017 World Cup , he was among the top 32, with the team he won bronze in 2018 , the first World Cup medal for Sweden since 2001 . In doubles with Kristian Karlsson, he was again vice European champion .

With his quarter-finals in the Europe Top 16 , he qualified for the first time for the World Cup in October, where he reached the main round and lost 3: 4 to Dimitrij Ovtcharov. At the Swedish Open he won against Lin Gaoyuan, third in the World Cup, and reached the semi-finals, in doubles he took silver. At the 2019 World Cup he surprisingly reached the final and won silver after a defeat against Ma Long , in June he came in the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time. For the 2019/20 season he moved to the Bundesliga for SV Werder Bremen , with whom he reached the play-offs, where the semi-finals were lost to 1. FC Saarbrücken .

Others

He is not related to his doubles partner Kristian Karlsson .

In contrast to most top players, he has been using a rubber with short pimples on the forehand of his table tennis bat since his youth , while on the backhand he has used a "normal, non-slip" backside rubber .

He married in mid-2018 and took Falck's name from his wife. He became a father in October 2019.
