Tang Peng ( Chinese 唐 鵬 / 唐 鹏 , Pinyin Táng Péng , Jyutping Tong 4 Paang 4 ; born February 4, 1981 in Beijing ) is a table tennis player and Olympian from Hong Kong .
Career
First Tang Peng performed internationally under the flag of China, since 2005 he has been eligible to play for Hong Kong.
Tang Peng achieved his first international successes at the 1999 Asian Youth Championships, where he was first with the Chinese team, reached the semi-finals in singles and the final in doubles with Wang Hao . In 2003 he was second in the individual and winner in the team competition at the Asian Championships for adults. At this point he was already among the top 50 players in the world rankings .
However, further international appearances did not follow until 2005 after he switched to the Hong Kong Association. In 2007 he took part in his first world championship for Hong Kong - since then he was represented at all world championships until 2016 - and played successfully on the Pro Tour , so that he could qualify for the Pro Tour Grand Finals.
In 2008 he won bronze with the team, and on the Pro Tour he qualified for the Grand Finals in doubles with Jiang Tianyi . The duo was also successful in 2010 and won gold at the Grand Finals that year. Tang Peng also took part in the World Cup for the first time in 2010 and advanced to 18th place in the world rankings in March, making him the best-placed player in Hong Kong. In 2012 he qualified for the Summer Olympics. Here he was fourth with the team. At the 2013 World Cup , he achieved his best result to date when he made it to the quarter-finals. Since that year he has also played doubles with Wong Chun Ting , with whom he won three World Tour titles in 2014 and made it into the semifinals of the Grand Finals, just as in the singles. At the 2015 World Cup he made it to the quarter-finals - his best result to date - and then lost to eventual world champion Ma Long . At this point he was at number 11 in the world rankings, his best placement, which he achieved unusually late at the age of 34.
He qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games , but retired after the first game as in 2012. With the team he made it to the quarterfinals, just like in the World Cup . That year he played doubles with Ho Kwan Kit , with whom he reached the semifinals at the Grand Finals .
Private
Tang Peng has been married to the table tennis player Tie Yana since 2009 .
