In 1979 he became German youth champion in singles and doubles (with Markus Fischer). A year later he defended the title in singles and won in mixed with Susanne Wenzel . From 1979 to 1981 he won three times in a row at the top 12 youth ranking tournament. There are also placements at international German championships, 1979 silver in mixed with Susanne Wenzel and gold in singles in 1981.
In 1979 and 1981 he won the European Mixed Championship with Susanne Wenzel.
The successes in the youth field raised hopes for a future high performer, which he could not fulfill.
