Carl Prean
Carl Prean (born August 20, 1967 in Ryde ( Isle of Wight )) is an English table tennis player . He has played in the table tennis Bundesliga for years (including Grenzau , Jülich and Saarbrücken ) and participated in the Olympic Games in Seoul , Barcelona and Atlanta . Since the 2006/2007 season he has been playing for the German regional division Post Sport-Verein Wuppertal, with whom he was promoted from the major league.
Teenager
Carl Prean began to play table tennis at the age of 8 and was encouraged by his father. As a 13-year-old he won the state championship for schoolchildren and young people. In 1981 he won the European School Team Championship together with Billy Gleave, and in 1982 he won the individual title in Hollabrunn.
In 1983 he took first place in the English rankings. In the same year he won the European Youth Championship in doubles (with Nicky Mason). In 1985 he became European youth champion in singles and mixed (with Csilla Bátorfi ).
Material and style of play
As a teenager, Prean played an "offensive material game". He uses a combination bat with long pimples and a 2.5 mm attack coating. He masters all offensive and defensive techniques with the long pimple rubber and turns the club during the rally. The two-color rule affected him a little less than pure defenders, as the reaction time was lower due to the faster game. However, due to the easy differentiation of the rubbers, it was possible to play the long pimple with a subsequent hard ball, which Prean was unable to counter. He plays with Juic Leggy 1.5 mm, a special blade designed for him, and Driva Smash 2.5 mm.
Adult
At the 1983 World Cup , with a score of 15: 4, he made a significant contribution to the bronze medal of the English team. In 1988 he was runner-up with the English team, and Prean beat Jan-Ove Waldner in the final . Prean was German champion with Saarbrücken in 1989 and Grenzau in 1991. He currently plays (2007/2008 season) on board 1 for Post SV Wuppertal in the Regionalliga. Prean only occasionally takes part in games, but is very successful. He is a three-time English champion in men's singles.

Prean's mother grew up in Aachen, his father John Prean in Austria; from 1987 to 1991 he was chairman of the English TT association ETTA. In August 1985, Carl Prean received German citizenship, and from then on he had dual citizenship. This entitled him to appear internationally for England and at the same time to play in a German club despite the foreigners clause of 1985 .
