European table tennis championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Table Tennis Championship (TT-EM) for adults has been held annually since 2008. Previously it took place every 2 years, namely (since 2003) in the years with an odd number. In the same year the individual world championship took place. In the "even" years, however, the table tennis team world championship is held.

The TT-EM was introduced in 1958, the organizer is the European TT-Union ETTU . European championships for juniors have been held annually since 1955. In 1995 a European Championship for seniors (active people aged 40 and over) took place in Vienna for the first time .

In 2003 the ETTU Congress decided to limit the number of teams to 16 at future European Championships. The teams should qualify through the Europa League . In 2006 it was decided that the event would be held annually in autumn. The previous qualifications and the mixed competitions, which have been held in a separate mixed European championship since 2009, are omitted. From 2012, only the single and double competitions should be held in even years, the team competitions will be dropped. Since there was no organizer for this in 2014, there were only team competitions this year. Singles, doubles and team competitions are played in odd years.

The qualification mode has been changed several times. In 2009, the European Nations League was introduced as a follow-up event to the Europa League . Since 2013, the European Championship qualification has taken place in a competition where the national teams compete against each other in one place within a week. First, the game is played in two groups of six in the mode everyone against everyone. The first and second placed start at the European Championship in the quarter finals, places three to five start in the second round.

From 2009 to 2013 the European Mixed Championships were held as a separate competition. In 2015 there was no mixed competition, since 2016 it has been a normal part of the European Championships again.

European TT Championships for Juniors

These championships were launched by the DTTB in 1955. The focus was on the motive that young people from Europe should get to know each other. The event was called the European Youth Meeting . Because of the acceptance, the tournament was repeated annually in different countries. Initially the tournaments were carried out under the responsibility of the world association ITTF , from 1964 the European association ETTU took over the implementation.

In February 2017, a European championship for the U21 age group was held for the first time.

politics

  • In 1962, the Eastern Bloc countries protested against West Berlin as the venue. After the European table tennis association ETTU insisted on West Berlin, the states of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and the Soviet Union boycotted the event. Yugoslavia took part in the EM.
  • In 1964, the Swedish organizers changed the inscription on the sign of the invasion event to "West Germany" (instead of Federal Republic of Germany). The FRG team then threatened to leave early, which the Swedes prevented with a reasonable apology.

philately

In the course of time, various postage stamps related to table tennis appeared:

  • In 1958, on the occasion of the 1st European Championship, Hungary published a sports series, the set consisted of 7 values ( Michel catalog no. 1542–1548). The brands with a value of 20 fillers and 30 fillers had table tennis motifs. They were perforated with a print run of 60,000 and cut with a print run of 20,000. A special stamp was used in Budapest for this European Championship.
  • In 1976, a special stamp with a table tennis motif appeared in the CSSR (Michel no. 2311).
  • In 1982 Hungary issued a special stamp worth 2 forints (Michel catalog no. 2547), namely a perforated version with an edition of almost 4 million pieces and an imperforate version with an edition of 7600 pieces.
  • In 1984 there was a special stationary from the USSR for the European Championship in Moscow.
  • On March 23, 2007, the Serbian Post issued a postage stamp (Michel no. 185), printed in small sheets of 9 postage stamps, and 1 stamp block (Michel no. Block 1). There was also a first day special cancellation in Belgrade.
  • On September 23, 2011, the Polish Post issued a special stationary (postcard) for the 2011 European Championships in Gdańsk / Poland. The imprinted postage stamp (value stamp) shows the motif table tennis.
  • The following postage stamp issues have been issued so far for the European Junior and Youth Championships:
    • July 18, 1968 USSR (Michel No. 3513),
    • June 30, 1992 CSSR (Michel-No. 3121),
    • July 5, 2006 Bosnia and Herzegovina (Michel no. 454) printed in miniature sheets of 10 stamps.
