Laima Amelina (born Balaišytė ; born January 3, 1948 in Vilnius ) is a former Lithuanian table tennis player . She took part in four world championships and one European championship in the 1960s . In 1969 she became team world champion in table tennis .

Some sources give a different date of birth, around March 1948.

Career

Laima Balaišytė is the daughter of the table tennis player and multiple Russian champion Bronė Balaišienė (1921–1983), b. Vitartaitė. She started playing table tennis when she was eight. In 1973 she graduated from the Sports Institute in Moscow .

Success in youth

She won many international medals at European Youth Championships. In 1961 and 1962 she won gold here with the team, in 1961 she reached the final in doubles and in 1962 she became European champion in singles. In 1965 she reached the semi-finals in singles, in doubles with Bella Anisimova she won silver.

Adults

In 1962 and 1964 Laima Balaišytė won the Russian national championship. At the World Championships in 1963 and 1965 , she did not come close to medal ranks. It was more successful in 1967 in the team competition, the team finished second behind Japan. In 1969 the Russian women's team became world champions.

Private

In the mid-1960s, Laima Balaišytė married the Russian table tennis international Anatoli Amelin . She has a daughter with him. Her brother Rimgaudas Balaiša is President of the Lithuanian Table Tennis Association ( Lietuvos stalo teniso federacija ).
