Edvard Vecko

Edvard Vecko (born October 29, 1944 in Hrastnik ) is a Slovenian table tennis player and trainer. He was European champion several times. He later worked as a trainer in Germany and Austria.

Career in Yugoslavia

Vecko grew up with four siblings in Hrastnik. In 1956 he came to table tennis. He joined the Olimpija Ljubljana Association. After winning the Slovenian and Yugoslavian youth championships, he was in Bled in 1962 together with Istvan Korpa youth European champion in doubles and with the team.

In the same year he also took part in the European Championship for Adults in Berlin . He was second in doubles with Istvan Korpa and European men's champion with the Yugoslav team. At the next European Championship in 1964 he finished 2nd with the team. 1968 he was double European champion with Antun Stipančić ; they defeated the Swedes Alser / Johannson in the final .

Between 1962 and 1969, Vecko was invited to 140 international matches. He was represented four times at world championships , namely 1963 , 1965 , 1967 and 1969 . At the Balkan Championships, he took first place twice in doubles and in mixed. He won a total of 15 titles at Yugoslav championships.

Career in Germany and Austria

From October 1970 Vecko worked as a state trainer in the Austrian Table Tennis Association . After a short stopover in Slovenia - in 1975 he coached the women's team at Olimpija Ljubljana - he moved to Germany in 1976. Here he played with the club TTC Calw in the Bundesliga . In the same year the TTV Württemberg-Hohenzollern signed him as an association trainer. In 1981 he joined SSV Reutlingen 05 and later TTV Neuhausen (2nd Bundesliga). In mid-1982 he became the coach of the Yugoslav women's national team.

In 1999 he returned to Austria. In Carinthia he dedicated himself as an association trainer to the youth work. With the clubs DSG St. Veit and SC Völkendorf (from 2003) he played in the national league.

Private

Vecko is married. He has a son (* 1972) and a daughter (* 1976).
