Mary Shannon
Mary Shannon (born February 12, 1944 ) is a former English table tennis player who was one of the best in Europe in the 1960s and won the European Championship three times.
Career
Mary Shannon won the national English championship several times , in singles in 1963, 1965 to 1968 and 1970, in doubles from 1963 to 1965 with Diane Rowe , in 1966, 1967 and 1970 with Karenza Mathews and in mixed in 1963, 1966 with Brian Wright , and in 1965 with Chester Barnes and 1970 with Denis Neale .
Mary Shannon first became aware of her in 1962, when she became European champion in doubles with Diane Rowe in Berlin and won silver with the English women's team. In 1964 she defended the doubles title and also won the team competition. In mixed with Chester Barnes , she was second in 1966 . She reached the semi-finals in 1966 with Diane Rowe and in 1968 with Karenza Smith in doubles and in 1968 and 1970 with Denis Neale in mixed.
From 1963 to 1969, Mary Shannon was nominated for all four world championships . She won bronze twice, in 1965 with the English team and in 1969 in mixed with Denis Neale. In the ITTF world rankings she was ranked seventh in mid-1965.
After 1970 she ended her international career.
Private
Mary Shannon worked as an X-ray photographer. In September 1965 she married the English table tennis player Brian Wright and then performed under the name Wright-Shannon . She has at least three children.
