Diane Schöler (née Rowe) (born April 14, 1933 in Marylebone near London ) is a former British - German table tennis player . Between 1951 and 1973 she won 20 medals at world championships and 14 medals at European championships, the majority of them as British; In 1951 and 1954 she celebrated her greatest successes and was both world champion in doubles. From 1966 she competed as a German and won four of her medals.

Career

In 1933 twin sisters Diane and Rosalind Rowe were born. At the age of 14 they started playing table tennis seriously. They became a member of the Ealing club in western London, where the multiple world champion Victor Barna trained and promoted them athletically.

Diane was left handed. She played defense until the 1951 World Cup, after which she switched her style to attack. By 1966 she played more than 200 international matches for England and took part in 11 world championships during this time. She won the gold medal in doubles with her sister in 1951 and 1954. That's why they were often called the Rowe twins . In 1962 and 1964, Diane was European champion in doubles with Mary Shannon .

In early 1966 she married the top German player Eberhard Schöler , with whom she has a daughter. From then on she lived in Düsseldorf and was a member of Post SV Düsseldorf . She was nominated for a German international match for the first time in October 1966, where she lost her individual against Hungary in Weissenthurm . For Germany, she started four more world championships from 1967.

On April 27, 1973, she resigned from international competitive sport when she played her 70th and last international match for Germany.

Functionary and author

She then worked as a trainer and ladies' manager for the West German Table Tennis Association until 1997 . In 1993 she received the ITTF Merit Award . From 1997 to 2013 she was President of the Swaythling Club International . For her services to table tennis, she was awarded the Dr. Dieter Mauritz Memorial Prize awarded.
