West German table tennis association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The West German Table Tennis Association (WTTV) is the amalgamation of table tennis clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia . It forms the umbrella organization for 1202 table tennis clubs (as of March 2019). In terms of the number of clubs, it is the third largest state association under the umbrella of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB), behind the Bavarian TTV and the Lower Saxony table tennis association . In the past there have been several violent controversies between the WTTV and the DTTB.

The WTTV organizes the game operations below the upper leagues assigned to the DTTB. It is divided into the 5 districts Arnsberg (6 districts), Düsseldorf (8 districts), Middle Rhine (9 districts), Münster (5 districts) and Ostwestfalen-Lippe (7 districts) with a total of 35 districts.

The first chairman is Helmut Joosten (* 1949), the full-time managing director is Michael Keil.

history

founding

Table tennis activities are known in West Germany as early as 1928, especially in the districts of Düsseldorf, Cologne-Bonn and Münster. In 1929, the TTC Blau-Weiss Düsseldorf-Oberkassel club in Rheinhausen became the first unofficial West German team champion.

The WTTV was founded on November 26, 1931 in the Cologne Gildenhaus by twelve clubs belonging to the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB ). It was a merger of the then existing associations Lower Rhine-Westphalia and West German TT Association. The WTTV itself did not belong to the DTTB. Otto Schäplitz (Rheinhausen) became the first chairman.

Controversies with the DTTB in the pre-war period

The association tried to differentiate itself from the DTTB, which led to violent conflicts between these two associations.

Already at the time the WTTV was founded, there were differences with the DTTB, mainly about financial matters. The WTTV chairman Otto Schäplitz spoke out in favor of joining the DTTB, some clubs wanted to prevent this. To them the amount of the contributions required by the DTTB seemed inappropriate, offered the DTTB only 25 percent of the contribution income of the WTTV "in the interest of the great German idea of sports unity". They feared that, as an association with well-functioning structures, they would be at a disadvantage compared to other state associations because the DTTB would have to subsidize more there in order to set up comparable organizational structures. The DTTB rejected this proposal - reduced contributions - on March 13, 1933.

In 1932 the DTTB publicly declared that it was the only internationally recognized German association. Nevertheless, in January 1933, the WTTV applied to the world association ITTF to be recognized as an independent member. This application was rejected, the ITTF saw the DTTB as the sole representative of German table tennis.

Another crisis arose because of the international tournament in Bochum in March 1933. In addition to German players, the organizing WTTV invited Hungarians Miklós Szabados and László Bellák , who had already been banned from the DTTB because they had entered German club tournaments without its approval. In response, the DTTB threatened all German participants with a ban, provided that their club was not a member of the DTTB.

At that time, the chairman Otto Schäplitz advocated integration into the DTTB, but did not find a majority for this. The controversy ended in 1933 in the course of the “ Gleichschaltung” , as a result of which the area of the WTTV was divided into the three districts "9" = Westphalia, "10" = Lower Rhine and "11" = Middle Rhine and these districts were connected to the DTTB.

In 1936 the WTTV first held the German Championships (Gelsenkirchen).

post war period

The new beginning after the Second World War took place with the establishment of the North Rhine-Westphalia Table Tennis Association (TTLVNR) on August 9, 1947 in Bochum. The first chairman was Dr. Oscar Witscher († 1949), his successor was Karlheinz Simon (until 1951). This association renamed itself on July 9, 1950 in Essen to become the West German Table Tennis Association . In 1950 the structure of the association was also established: 11 districts and 50 districts

The magazine Tischtennis West appeared from September 1990 until the end of 2013 .

Renewed controversies with the DTTB in the post-war period

In 1949 the board of the TTLVNR announced that it did not recognize the establishment of the DTTB in July 1949 because such sports associations were banned by the Allied Control Commission and because the state association chairmen were not entitled to found a national sports authority. Rather, the foundation should be carried out by elected delegates from the individual regional associations.

Another dispute broke out with the DTTB. During the tenure of Carl Adloff , then sports warden Josef Flormann acted against the DTTB. His motto: “The politics of WTTV is the fight against the federal government.” This contributed to the replacement of Carl Adloff, who rejected this motto. During the term of office of chairman Max Gerdes, the dispute with the DTTB continued to smolder. It was about the pricing of table tennis balls on the part of the DTTB as well as the financing of the magazine Deutscher Tischtennis-Sport , which has been published by WTTV since 1950. In addition, WTTV managing director Alfred Berg integrated against DTTB president Karl-Heinz Eckardt in January 1953 . The DTTB then demanded that the WTTV should release Alfred Berg from his duties. This in turn rejected the WTTV. The dispute escalated to such an extent that the DTTB excluded the WTTV from sports activities from May 26 to July 10, 1953. At a meeting in Duisburg on June 20, 1953, both sides agreed to work together sensibly in the future; the exclusion of the WTTV was lifted on July 10th.

In 1955 another conflict broke out. Some West German clubs competed against foreign clubs without the required approval from the DTTB. Because of this violation of the "Regulations for International Gaming", the DTTB imposed a ban on WTTV for all international gaming at home and abroad in January 1955. The DTTB lifted this ban in May 1955.
