Byzantine is an American thrash - / Groove Metal - band from Charleston , West Virginia . The band released three studio albums in the period from 2004 until they broke up in 2008. After the reunification in 2010, two more studio albums have been released so far. A new album, The Cicada Tree , is announced for July 28th, 2017.
Band history
The band was formed in 2000 by three friends Chris "OJ" Ojeda, Tony Rorhbough and Cid Adams. The band created a first demo with a drum machine instead of a drummer.
In 2001 the next demo was recorded, which was distributed openly and also reached the drummer Matt Wolfe. He joined the band after the demo was recorded.
At the end of 2002, a studio was used for the first time to record the next demo and so the third work was created. The demo reached Chris Adler from the band Lamb of God through their webmaster . Adler was so enthusiastic about the band's music that he had them perform as the inaugural band at a concert in Virginia .
It was through this appearance that Prosthetic Records became aware of them, with whom they are now under contract. The contract with Prosthetic Records gave the band the opportunity to record their first album . The Fundamental Component was finally released in February 2004 and was listed in the top 20 best metal albums of 2004 by Uranium.
In July 2005 the second studio album … And They Shall Take Up Serpents was released , which stylistically combines classic metal and southern groove elements as well as meshuggah- like riffs . After the album was released, bassist Cid Adams left the band and was replaced by longtime friend Michael "Skip" Cromer.
In January 2008 the group released their third and final studio album, Oblivion Beckons . Just a few days after the release, on January 26th, 2008, the band announced their breakup via MySpace .
In March 2010 the band gave some reunion concerts around West Virginia. During 2010 the band members decided to revive the group. At the end of January 2012, the official reunion with founding guitarist Tony Rohrbough will be announced. A new, self-financed album will follow in 2013. Tony Rohrbough can still be heard on this album, but he and bassist Michael Cromer will leave the band in 2013. Brian Henderson, who replaces Tony Rorhbough, will be the new lead guitarist . Sean Sydor is the new man on bass.
On May 29, 2014, it was announced that Byzantine would record their fifth album in September. Jay Hannon acted as producer, for the first time with the new guitarist Brian Henderson and the new bassist Sean Sydnor. On April 7th, 2015 the studio album "To Release Is to Resolve" was released again as a self-financed work.
style
Byzantine said they played a mix of styles that included classic metal and southern groove elements as well as breaks and riffs such as those found in Meshuggah, Pantera and Testament . Furthermore, certain stylistic similarities to Lamb of God , especially on the album Oblivion Beckons , can be recognized.
