Ricardo Walther (born November 30, 1991 in Brühl ) is a German table tennis player . He is currently playing for the German record champions Borussia Düsseldorf .

Career

Ricardo Walther started his career at TTC Blau-Weiß Brühl-Vochem. The right-hander won the bronze medal with the team at the European Schools Championships in Prague in 2005. At the age of 15 he moved to SC Bayer 05 Uerdingen in the 2nd Bundesliga. During this season Walther won the International Schoolchildren Tournament in Slovakia (U15). Due to the direct relegation of the Krefeld team, he moved again after only one season, this time to TTC Hagen . There he also played in the 2nd Bundesliga North. After a very good season in 4th position, he drew attention to himself and was signed by TTC Ruhrstadt Herne a year later . At the 2009 European Youth Championships in Prague, Walther again won the bronze medal with the team. In the same year he won the silver medal with the youth national team at the youth world championships in Cartagena (Colombia) .

With Herne he became champions of the 2nd Bundesliga North in 2009/10, while Walther was the best player in the middle pair cross of the league. After the season, Walther moved to TTC indeland Jülich because after his club's promotion to the 1st Bundesliga, the top division came too early for him. In 2008 Walther qualified for the German championships for the first time. He had to take a long break due to a stress fracture in his right metatarsus and postpone his debut at this tournament. A year later he took part in the German championships for the first time in Trier . After winning the group and a clear victory in the "round of 32", he clearly lost against Bastian Steger with 0: 4 sets in the round of 16 . In his first season at TTC indeland Jülich Walther played in 2nd position. He managed to defend "his" championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga North. However, Jülich renounced promotion to the 1st Bundesliga. So Walther played in the 2nd Bundesliga North again in the 2011/12 season, this time at number 1. Through successes against top 50 players such as the Hong Kong Chinese Cheung Yuk , third place in the U21 tournament at the Austrian Open and After winning the junior competition at the Swedish Open, the Jülich climbed 245 places in the world rankings from September to November from 426 to 181st.

For the 2012/13 season Walther moved to the German record champions Borussia Düsseldorf in the DTTL . He replaced János Jakab at position 4 . There he won against Lars Hielscher on the first day of the match . During the entire season he was used in nine games and had a balanced record. In 2013/14 Düsseldorf became German champions, Walther played in seven games.

In March 2014 Walther was able to find himself in the top 100 of the ITTF world rankings for the first time. After good tournament results in Dubai and Qatar, he made a significant leap and came in 98th place in the ranking. In May 2014 Walther won his first ITTF World Tour event. At the Croatian Open in Zagreb he prevailed in the final with 4: 3 sets against the Japanese Masaki Yoshida . This makes Walther the fourth German player to win a World Tour event. In 2014 he joined the TTC Hagen and in 2015 the TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt .

In 2017 he moved to Bundesliga club ASV Grünwettersbach , this year he also took part in a team EM for the first time and won gold with the German team. In the same year he was able to qualify in doubles with Ruwen Filus for the Grand Finals , in which they could not take part due to an injury Walther. For this they won bronze at the European Championship 2018 . In the 2018/19 cup quarter-finals , Walther beat Timo Boll and thus contributed to the ASV's first semi-finals. In January 2019, his move back to Borussia Düsseldorf was announced.

In 2020 he became German individual champion for the first time when he defeated Benedikt Duda in the final.

National team

On January 1, 2012, national coach Jörg Roßkopf appointed Walther to the German national team's B squad along with Zoltan Fejer-Konnerth (Grenzau), Ruwen Filus (Grenzau), Philipp Floritz (Plüderhausen), Patrick Franziska (Hanau) and Steffen Mengel (Hanau ), after having trained in close proximity to the squad and attended courses for the past few years, but officially not being part of it. He replaces Lars Hielscher .

On July 14, 2012, Walther was appointed to the senior national team for the first time. In the international match against Sweden he won against Kristian Karlsson.

In an internal team qualification tournament for the European Championship 2015 , he surprisingly defeated all three competitors with Ruwen Filus , Bastian Steger and Steffen Mengel and thus secured a starting place in the singles, doubles and team competitions.
