Helmuth Hoffmann
Helmuth Hoffmann (born November 7, 1919 in Cologne , † June 19, 2010 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German table tennis player . He was five times German champion in doubles and mixed competitions. In the individual, he took second place twice.
Career
Helmuth Hoffmann started playing table tennis in 1934. To take part in the German championship for the first time, he cycled from Cologne to Gelsenkirchen in 1936. In 1937 he played for the first time in the national team in a competition against the Netherlands.
Hoffmann had his greatest successes in the years after the Second World War . He was also involved in the first international match for a German team after the war. On January 24, 1950, he competed against Sweden in Gelsenkirchen together with Dieter Mauritz and Heinz Raack . Between 1937 and 1953 he was appointed to the German national team 15 times. Until 1978 he played with DJK Alemannia Cologne in the major league. From 1947 to 1949 he reached the final of the German team championship three times with ESV Blau-Rot Bonn , where the team lost each time to MTV Munich 1879 .
He was known for his sharp backhand undercut, which he himself called "down spin" (as opposed to overlapping topspin ).
Honors
In 1958 the West German Table Tennis Association honored Hoffmann with the Silver Badge of Honor, and in 1967 with the Golden Badge of Honor. In 1968/69 he received the Albrecht Nikolai Cup , a challenge cup which is awarded to an athlete or a club for special athletic achievements, special fairness or special services to table tennis.
Private
During the Second World War , Hoffmann suffered a serious leg injury in France, which could be healed. 1945 returned from American captivity.
He has been married since 1951 and has a daughter (* 1956) and a son (* 1959) with his wife. Most recently Hoffmann lived in Forsbach , a district of Rösrath near Cologne. He still played tennis and was the German age group champion in this sport in 2004.
He died in June 2010 in Bergisch Gladbach and was buried in the central cemetery in Rösrath.
Helmuth Hoffmann Cup
The table tennis district Middle Rhine awards the Helmuth Hoffmann Cup as the highest honor to deserving athletes and officials. So far the following people have been honored:
