Wolf Berger

Wolf Berger (born February 17, 1939 in Aschaffenburg ) is a former German table tennis player . He was European youth champion and German mixed champion.

Career

Berger has lived in Frankfurt am Main since he was six. At first he operated several sports at the Grün-Weiß Frankfurt club. In 1956 he joined Eintracht Frankfurt .

At the German youth championship 1954/55 he was runner-up in doubles with Erich Arndt . At the first European Junior Championship, which was held in Ruit auf den Fildern (near Stuttgart) in 1955 , he won the individual title.

In the adult field, Berger is 14 times Hesse champion, of which he won two titles in singles, namely in 1958 and 1966. In 1959 he and his partner Hannelore Schlaf became German mixed champions. In 1963 he finished second in doubles with Otmar Stock . The greatest success with Eintracht Frankfurt was the German runner-up in 1957. From 1967 to 1972 he played with this club in the Bundesliga . In November 1956 Berger was nominated for the international match against the Netherlands. Here he won against Bert Onnes and lost to Wim Stoop. In another international match against France in 1963, he lost both singles.

Berger achieved many successes in mixed with his sister, the six-time national player Marlies Berger . With her he reached the quarter-finals at the European Championship in 1962 .

In 1974 Berger ended his active career. Since then he has worked as a journalist, at times as deputy editor-in-chief at the Abendpost / Nachtausgabe , later as deputy editor-in-chief at Bild .
