Erich Arndt (table tennis player)
Erich Arndt (born May 18, 1938 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a former German table tennis player .
Greatest successes
As early as April 1953, attention was drawn to Erich Arndt, when he reached the final while taking part in the international English junior championships in London and took second place. Before that he had eliminated the favorite Cliff Booth (England), the French Roß and the English Morley.
Arndt was appointed to the national team for the first time in 1956. In February he won all three singles against Switzerland in Zurich. Between 1956 and 1967 he played a total of 53 times for the national team. During this time he was one of the best players in Germany. However, he was overshadowed by Conny Freundorfer and Eberhard Schöler and therefore “only” took 2nd place in German championships three times. In 1962 he reached - as the first German - the final of the European Championship in Berlin, where he lost to Hans Alsér (Sweden). After this success he was ranked 3rd in the ETTU rankings, the best position that a German had ever achieved. He took part in 4 world championships. In 1963 he defeated the reigning world champion Zhuang Zedong in an international match against China .
properties
As a left-hander, Arndt was uncomfortable for any opponent. He was one of the players who introduced topspin in Germany.
Career
First Erich Arndt played soccer, in 1949 he switched to the table tennis department. From 1949 to 1952 he played for the club SKV Mörfelden, which then split off and founded the TTC Mörfelden . Arndt stayed here - except for a brief guest appearance in 1970 in Rödelheim. In 1967 he ended his career as an international competitive athlete, but played for a long time ( in the 1979/80 season ) with Mörfelden in the table tennis Bundesliga . In 1988 he finished second again at the Senior World Championship. In that year he published his book Erich Arndt - A table tennis life.
Arndt is the patron of the nationwide "Erich-Arndt-Tournament" for young players, which the TTC Mörfelden organizes every year.
Private
Arndt married Lieselotte Keim in 1959, a sister of the teammates from Mörfelden at the time, Hermann and Walter Keim. With her she has a daughter named Birgit, who also competed in the Hessian championships. He worked in a data center in Darmstadt. Today he lives in Mörfelden-Walldorf.
