Marlies Berger

Marlies Berger - married Westphal - (* around 1943) is a German table tennis player .

Career

Berger began her career at the Grünweiß Frankfurt club and moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1957 . With its women's team, she was German champion in 1957/58 and 1958/59.

In 1962 she was nominated for the individual competitions of the European Championship . She won the singles against Ana Maria Navarro (Spain), Josee Wouters (Belgium) and lost in the third round to Mary Shannon (England). The doubles with Rosemarie Gomolla reached the quarter-finals after victories over Micheline Stas / Josiane Cornelis (Belgium) and Monique Jaquet / Franziska Hassler (Switzerland), where it failed to the later European champions Mary Shannon / Diane Rowe (England). She also made it to the quarter-finals in mixed with her brother Wolf Berger . They won against Paul Bertrand / Josee Wouters (Belgium), Bjorne Mellstroem / Birgitta Tegner (Sweden) and Manfred Konieczka / Edith Steinke (Germany). Then Alsér / Harst (Sweden / Germany) were too strong.

In April 1964, she played her first international match. She won once against the Netherlands and had to admit defeat twice. In total, she took part in six international matches, including several unofficial international matches.

In the 1963/64 season she achieved an 18-0 record in the Oberliga , which was then the highest German division. At the National German Championships she reached the semi-finals twice: in 1963 in doubles with Karla Schulz and in 1966 in mixed with Wolf Berger.

Private

Berger has a brother, the national player Wolf Berger . After her marriage she was called Marlies Westphal . In 1962 she became secretary at the German Football Association (DFB) .
