Dieter Köhler (table tennis player)

Dieter Köhler (born December 20, 1938 in Pützchen near Bonn) is a German table tennis player who played 24 international matches from 1957 to 1961. In 1959 and 1960 he was ranked second in the national ranking.

Career

Köhler is a defender who can shoot with the backhand from the defensive. He began his career with the Mainz HC and Blau-Weiß Gonsenheim clubs, before joining the Oberliga club Mainz 05 (until 1959) in 1954 , which was one of the strongest German teams at the time. In 1956 he won the German youth championship in singles and doubles with Rüdiger Luding and the international championship in England in singles. At the European Youth Championships in 1955 he won the title with the team, in doubles he reached the final in 1956 with Hans-Jörg Otto. In 1957 he was first at the national ranking tournament for men .

In February 1959 Köhler won the German university championship in singles. In the same year he was nominated for the world championship , in which he defeated the Chinese Asian champion Wang Chuan-Yao in a team fight. In doubles with Heinz Harst , he reached the second round. At the end of 1959 he moved to Berlin to study law there. Here he joined the Tennis Borussia Berlin club . Köhler remained undefeated in the 5-2 victory of the German national team in Berlin against Austria. In 1960 he came at the International Championships from Holland to the final, which he lost to Hans Alsér .

Koehler took part twice in the European championships for adults. He was fifth with the men's team in 1958. In 1960 he reached the quarterfinals in singles, where he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Zoltán Berczik . Köhler achieved further successes at international championships. Here he finished second in the Netherlands in 1959 and first in France in 1961.

In 1961, Köhler withdrew from competitive sports in order to devote himself primarily to his studies.

Private

Köhler graduated from high school in 1958, studied law and later worked as a government director in Berlin's financial administration. In the 1960s he married Carola Müller, the daughter of the Berlin association president Erwin Müller.
