Matei Gantner
Matei Gantner (* 1934 ) is a Romanian table tennis player and trainer. In the 1950s he took part in five world championships and one European championship .
Career
Matei Gantner won a total of seven titles at the national Romanian championships, three in singles (1954, 1958, 1960), two in doubles (1955, 1957 each with Toma Reiter ) and two in mixed (1957, 1958 each with Ella Zeller ).
From 1953 to 1957 Matei Gantner was nominated five times for world championships . His greatest achievement was winning the bronze medal in the 1956 team competition in Tokyo. Here he defeated the Japanese Yoshio Tomita and Ichirō Ogimura in the semifinals , it was Ogimura's only defeat at this World Cup. At the World Championships in 1955 and 1957 , the Romanian team was fifth.
At the European Championship in 1958 he won bronze in doubles with Tiberiu Harastozi . In the ITTF world rankings he was ranked sixth in 1956.
In 1958 Matei Gantner fell out of favor in Romania, after which he was no longer considered in the national team.
He then began to train as a junior. In 1979 he emigrated to Germany with his family. He was employed as a coach at Borussia Düsseldorf from 1980 to 1986. During this time, the men's team won the German championship three times.
