Heinz Haupt

Heinz Haupt (born March 9, 1924 in Nünchritz (Saxony); † January 21, 2010 ) was a table tennis player and trainer of the GDR.

As an eight-year-old, Heinz Haupt ran handball and gymnastics in the ATV Leipzig-Reudnitz club. He played table tennis in the 1950s in the club BSG Erich Zeigner Leipzig , which later became the BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig and 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . With this club he was team champion of the GDR in 1950, 1960 and 1961. At the individual championships in the GDR he reached the final three times: in 1951 in singles and doubles in 1949 (with Siegfried Facius ) and 1955 (with Peter Schmidt ).

At the 1957 World Cup , main was used in the individual competitions, but where he was eliminated early. His greatest success was winning the bronze medal in doubles with Helmut Hanschmann at the 1958 European Championship . After four wins, they lost to the Hungarians Zoltán Berczik / Ferenc Sidó in the semifinals .

In 1958, Haupt was ranked 10th in the GDR rankings.

In 1961, Haupt ended his active career.

Trainer

From 1961 to 1965 Haupt studied at the German University of Physical Culture in Leipzig. At the same time he worked as a trainer at TSG Oberschöneweide and at BSG foreign trade in Berlin . Here he won the European Cup with the women's team in 1968 and 1969 . At the 1969 World Cup , he looked after the vice world champion Gabriele Geißler .

From 1974 to 1989 Haupt was chairman of the coaching council of the GDR table tennis association DTTV and most recently head coach. In 1989 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
