Heinz-Gerhard Haupt (born March 21, 1943 in Göttingen ) is a German historian .

Life

Haupt studied history, political science and Romance studies in Göttingen and Paris as well as at the Free University of Berlin from 1962 to 1972 . In 1972, he was with a thesis on French history doctorate . From 1974 to 1985 he taught as a professor of modern French history at the University of Bremen . From 1985 to 1989, Haupt worked as a historian in Lyon and Paris. From 1989 to 1993 he was Professor of European History at the European University Institute in Florence . In 1993, Haupt was appointed professor for modern history at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . In 1998 he received a professorship for general history with a special focus on social history at Bielefeld University . In 2003 he was offered a professorship for European history at the European University Institute in Florence, which he held until his retirement.
