Georgina Singleton

Georgina Singleton (born October 11, 1977 in Ascot , Berkshire ) is a former British judoka . She was European Champion in 2002, European Championship runner-up in 1998 and 2000 and European Championship third place in 2003.

Athletic career

The 1.52 m tall Georgina Singleton fought mostly in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 52 kilograms. In 1994 she won the Junior World Championships, two weeks later she won a bronze medal at the Junior European Championships. In 1995 she received a gold medal at the Junior European Championships.

At the European Championships in Oviedo in 1998 , Singleton defeated Swiss Isabelle Schmutz in the semifinals , and in the final she lost to Raffaella Imbriani from Germany. In the summer of 1999 Singleton won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca. At the European Championships in Wroclaw in 2000 , she defeated the Dutch Deborah Gravenstijn in the semifinals , and in the final she was defeated by the French Laëtitia Tignola . The following year she lost to Isabelle Schmutz in the semifinals at the 2001 European Championships in Paris, after which she was defeated by Laëtitia Tignola in the battle for a bronze medal. At the 2001 World Championships Singleton was eliminated after early defeats.

In May 2002 Singleton defeated the Belgian Ilse Heylen in the semifinals of the European Championships 2002 in Maribor . She won the gold medal in the final against the Spaniard Ana Carrascosa . Two months later, the 2002 Commonwealth Games took place in Manchester . The England competitor Georgina Singleton met Northern Irish Lisa Bradley in the final and won the title. At the European Championships 2003 in Düsseldorf Singleton lost in the semifinals against the Slovenian Petra Nareks , the battle for bronze she won against the Belgian Kristel Taelman . At the 2003 World Championships in Osaka Singleton was defeated in the quarterfinals by Cuban Amarilis Savón . After two wins in the Hope Round, she lost to the Japanese Yuki Yokosawa in the battle for bronze . In the spring of 2004 Singleton retired from the European Championships in Bucharest after a quarter-final defeat against Ilse Heylen in the hoping round against the Russian Oxana Karsakowa . At the Olympic Games in Athens she was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Japanese Yuki Yokosawa. after a victory in the hope round against the North Korean Ri Sang-sim , she lost to Ilse Heylen and finished in seventh place.

After two years without participating in international championships, Georgina Singleton entered the 2007 European Championships in the weight class up to 57 kilograms and was eliminated in her opening fight against the Russian Natalija Yucharewa . At the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Singleton fought again in the half-light weight. She lost to the Chinese Shi Junjie in the quarter-finals , then defeated Ilse Heylen and finished in seventh place after her loss to the Japanese Yuka Nishida . Singleton played her last major tournament at the 2008 European Championships in Lisbon. After a quarter-final defeat against the French Audrey La Rizza and two wins in the hope round, she was defeated in the battle for a bronze medal by the Romanian Ioana Dinea-Aluaş .
