Raffaella Imbriani

Raffaella Imbriani (born January 24, 1973 in Karlsruhe ) is a former German judoka . She was vice world champion in 2001 and European champion in 1998 in the half-light weight category, up to 52 kilograms.

Career

The 1.58 m tall Raffaella Imbriani won a bronze medal at the Junior European Championships in 1991. In 1994 she won the military world championships. At the 1996 World Military Games, she won a bronze medal. In 1996 she won her first German championship title, followed by four more titles in 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2002. In 1998 she reached the finals at the World Cup and lost to the Cuban Legna Verdecia . At the European Championships in 1998, she defeated the Romanian Ioana Aluaş-Dinea in the semifinals and the British Georgina Singleton in the final . The following year she lost to the British Deborah Allen in the semi-finals of the European Championships in Bratislava , and won the battle for bronze against the French Marie-Claire Restoux . In 2000 she finished fifth at the European Championships in Wroclaw.

In 2001 Imbriani won the tournament in Paris. At the World Championships in Munich, she defeated Legna Verdecia in the quarterfinals and Salima Souakri from Algeria in the semifinals . In the final she was defeated by the North Korean Kye Sun-hui . In 2002 she won the World Masters tournament in Bucharest. At the 2003 World Championships in Osaka, Imbriani lost to the Japanese Yuki Yokosawa in the quarterfinals . Imbriani won a bronze medal with victories in the hope round over the South Korean Kim Kyung-ok , the Spaniard Ana Carrascosa and the North Korean Ri Sang-sim . In her last major tournament, the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Raffaella Imbriani won her first fight against US judoka Charlee Minkin by punishing her opponent. In the last sixteen she defeated the Greek Maria Tselaridou by Ippon after 4:16 minutes. Against the Chinese Xian Dongmei, she lost in the quarterfinals after 4:14 minutes. In the hope round Imbriani was eliminated by Waza-ari against the Algerian Salima Souakri.

Raffaella Imbriani started working for the Ettlingen judo club when she was five .
