Niki Bakogianni

Niki Bakogianni , also Bakoyianni ( Greek Νίκη Μπακογιάννη , born June 9, 1968 in Lamia ), is a former Greek high jumper .

Bakogianni was one of the torchbearers at the Olympic Games in Athens and lit the flame on the Acropolis as a runner before it was carried to the Olympic Stadium the next day.

successes

The 1.71 m tall athlete was Greek champion for the first time in 1985 and this year improved the national record to 1.85 meters. In 1986 she was fifth at the Junior World Championships in Athens with 1.83 meters. At the European Indoor Championships in The Hague in 1989, she was fifth with 1.84 meters. She reached this place with 1.88 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa in 1992. In 1996 she won the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm with 1.96 meters behind Alina Astafei with 1.98 meters.

At the Summer Olympics in Atlanta on August 3, 1996, three jumpers were still competing at 2.01 meters. The Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinowa and the Ukrainian Inha Babakowa have not yet had a single failed attempt, while Niki Bakogianni was able to look forward to a medal with three failed attempts. Kostadinova also jumped the 2.03 meters in the first attempt, Babakova tore three times, while Bakogianni also overcame the 2.03 meters in the last attempt. Kostadinova jumped 2.05 meters in the second attempt, Bakogianni failed three times, but had surprisingly won Olympic silver. Two years later she finished ninth again at the European Championships in Budapest with 1.89 meters.

Bakogianni set a total of 13 Greek national records from 1985 to 1996. Her personal best of 2.03 meters is still the Greek record today. At the Greek national championships she won in 1985, 1987-1989, 1991-1993, 1995, 1996 and 1998.
