Kayoko Obata ( Japanese 小 幡 佳 代 子 , Obata Kayoko ; born September 18, 1971 in Hiratsuka ) is a Japanese marathon runner .

In 1994 she was seventh at her debut at the Hokkaidō Marathon , in 1995 there fifth and in 1996 ninth at the Tokyo International Women's Marathon .

Her breakthrough came in 1997, when she finished ninth in the Nagoya Marathon in 2:32:01 hours and fourth in the Berlin Marathon in 2:27:27, improving her personal record by around five minutes each.

In 1998 she finished twelfth in the Osaka Women's Marathon and fourth in the Chicago Marathon . With a fourth place in Osaka early the following year, she qualified for the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville, where she was eighth.

In 2000 she was fifth in Osaka and fifth in Chicago. Another fifth place in Osaka in 2001 was followed by a sixth in the same year and a seventh in Chicago in 2002. After a disappointing 2004, in which she finished 17th in Osaka and Tokyo and twelfth in the Paris Marathon , she took a year off.

In 2006 she qualified with a second place in Osaka for the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, where she won the bronze medal. In 2008, she did not get past 22nd in Osaka. Shortly thereafter, she married her long-time fiancé Tomoyoshi Fujiwara.

In 2010 she finished fifth after a two-year hiatus in Osaka. According to her own statements, this should be the last race of her athletic career, but two months later she started at the Rome Marathon and came in 13th.

Kayoko Obata is 1.56 m tall and weighs 45 kg. She is a graduate of Tsukuba University . Most recently she started for the Acom team.
