Gert Thys (actually: Gatatso Thys ; born November 12, 1971 in Prieska ) is a South African long-distance runner who specializes in marathons .

Life

His breakthrough came in 1993 when he finished third in the Lake Biwa Marathon and second in the Fukuoka Marathon . An eleventh place in the New York City Marathon in 1995 was followed the following year by victory in the Beppu Ōita Marathon in 2:08:30 h. He qualified for the Olympic Games in Atlanta , where he came in 33rd place. In autumn he finished third in the Reims Marathon .

The following year he was second at the Beppu-Ōita Marathon and the Gold Coast Marathon and sixth at the World Half Marathon Championships in Košice .

In 1998 he was third in the Boston Marathon in 2:07:45 h, fifth in the World Half Marathon Championships in Uster and third in the Chicago Marathon in 2:07:52 h. In 1999 he won the Tokyo International Men's Marathon with the African record of 2:06:33 h. This made him the first person to break the 2:08 hour mark in three marathons. At the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in Seville , he came in 15th, and at the Half Marathon World Championships in Palermo he was twelfth.

In 2000 he was twelfth in the London Marathon , won the Great South Run and was seventh in Fukuoka. A tenth place in London in 2001 was followed by a fourth in the Seoul International Marathon in 2002 and a seventh in New York City. The following year he won the Seoul International Marathon with 2:08:42 h for the first time in four years under 2:10. At the World Athletics Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , he finished 30th, and in Tokyo he was seventh.

In 2004 he defended his title in Seoul in 2:07:06 h and was then nominated for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he came in 16th. At the end of the season he finished fourth in Fukuoka and second in Seoul at the beginning of next year.

In 2006 he won the Beppu-Ōita marathon and for the third time the marathon in Seoul. A month after this victory, it was announced that norandrosterone, a metabolite of the anabolic steroid nandrolone , had been discovered in a urine sample . The South African Athletics Association (ASA) issued a suspension on April 25, whereupon Thys declared his innocence and announced that he would have the B sample examined.

On May 16, 2006, the B sample was examined and also found positive. After a first hearing as part of the ASA's disciplinary proceedings took place on September 10, the proceedings were delayed and it was not until December 11, 2008 that a newly formed disciplinary committee found Thys guilty and suspended him from April 25, 2006 to as of December 11, 2008.

Thys, on the other hand, appealed to the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) on the grounds that on the one hand, the B sample had been examined by the same laboratory as the A sample, contrary to the rules in force at the time, and on the other hand the imposed ban was longer than the standard penalty of two Years. In July 2009, the International Court of Sports Justice ruled Thys and awarded him compensation to be paid by the ASA. The ASA appealed against the decision to the Swiss Federal Court . In its judgment of May 3, 2010, the latter decided that the International Sports Court was not competent in this case. Since the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), which is responsible in the opinion of the federal court, did not respond to Thys's objection, the case landed again before the CAS, which lifted the ASA's suspension. Although a prohibited substance had actually been found in Thys's sample, ASA and SAIDS had not succeeded in proving that deviating from the rules when examining A and B samples did not affect the validity of the findings. Thys was recognized for victory in the Seoul International Marathon 2006 and ASA was directed to pay Thys 10,000 Swiss Francs to reimburse his legal fees.

After returning to competition, Thys finished sixth in the 2010 Dalian Marathon and second in the Beijing Marathon .

In 2012 he finished fourth in the Two Oceans Marathon and set a record for the M40 age group over this distance with his 50 km split time of 2:48:40 h.
