Prieska is a town in Siyathemba Municipality , Pixley Ka Seme District , Northern Cape Province in South Africa . The city is named after the Koranna word for 'place of the lost goat' ( Prieschap ). In 2011 Prieska had 14,246 inhabitants.

history

The city, located at the foot of the Doringberg, was founded in 1882 and received city status in 1892. It spreads on the southern bank of the Orange .

The asteroid (1359) Prieska was named after the city in 1935 by the South African astronomer Cyril V. Jackson .

economy

Prieska is an agricultural center ; There are also large quantities of gemstones here , where the tiger's eye dominates. The region around Prieska is the world's largest supplier here.

In the past Prieska was also known for its mining . Larger copper and zinc deposits were discovered in 1968 and the "Prieska copper mine" from Anglovaal Mining Ltd. founded. It became one of the main extraction sites for these ores in the North Cape. Copper was the more valuable product, but zinc was extracted more in volume. The mine closed in 1996 as it became less and less profitable over the years.

Asbestos was mined on a large scale in the Prieska area until the end of the 1960s . The resulting environmental damage and an increased risk of illness can still be identified today.

The Prieska solar park with an output of 86 MWp was built near the city in 2016 .
