Vioolsdrift ( Afrikaans Vioolsdrif ) is a small town and border crossing to Namibia in the municipality of Nama Khoi , Namakwa District , Northern Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 599 people lived here.

geography

Vioolsdrift is about 300 meters above sea level on the south side of the Oranje and is connected to the Namibian border town of Noordoewer on the north side of the river by a road bridge. The place is located about 350 kilometers from the mouth of the Oranje in the Atlantic; It is 110 kilometers to Springbok .

The Orange River from Vioolsdrift upstream along the border with Namibia is one of the hottest and driest regions in South Africa with the most days of sunshine per year.

economy

The main economic factor is agriculture. Every year around 15 million cubic meters of water are taken from the river for irrigation. Alfalfa and vegetables are the main products. The irrigation canal is fed by the Vioolsdrift weir , a few kilometers upstream from the border crossing.

There are plans to build a dam off Vioolsdrift as a joint project between Namibia and South Africa. There is currently no way of damming the water of the Orange River and its tributaries for dry seasons; the next dam is 1,400 kilometers upstream at Vanderkloof . The site of the dam project is about 20 kilometers upstream from the border crossing between Namibia and South Africa; at the confluence of the Matjies River in the Oranje.

traffic

Vioolsdrift is connected to Cape Town via the South African national road N7 . In the direction of Windhoek on the territory of Namibia, the traffic route continues as the B1 national road to the Angolan border.
