Border crossing Noordoewer towards Namibia
just over the border

Noordoewer ( German  north bank ) is a settlement and Namibian border crossing to South Africa , about 120 kilometers from Grünau and forms a northern headland on the north bank of the Orange River . Until the mid-2000s, the settlement had the status of a village and has been trying to regain it since 2009.

Noordoewer is the administrative seat of the Karasburg-West constituency at about 300  m . The area downriver along the Oranje, in particular the Aussenkehr area , is known for its table grape cultivation . The grapes are exported to South Africa and Europe, among others.

The Noordoewer border is open all day and connected to the South African border post Vioolsdrift by a road bridge over the river. The border crossing is the southern end point of the Namibian National Road B1 , which runs through all of Namibia from north to south; from Vioolsdrift an expressway ( N7 ) continues to Cape Town .
