Settlement of Aussenkehr

Aussenkehr is a settlement in southern Namibia on the north bank of the Oranje , which forms the border with South Africa here. The place is about 120 kilometers southwest of Grünau in the constituency of Karasburg-West in the ǁKaras region .

Aussenkehr lies at about 95  m in the otherwise arid and sterile river area.

history

Aussenkehr was founded as the farm of a German corporation in German South West Africa , which began extensive irrigation projects there from 1910. The cultivation of table grapes and the rapid development of the settlement did not begin until 1988, when a Serbian investor bought the farm. Both the cultivation areas and the workers' settlements initially arose on private farmland. Only in 2003 did the investor transfer 644 hectares of building land to the Namibian state for the formal establishment of a town.

The population of the place is estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 inhabitants per season and according to other data even 30,000 inhabitants. Other sources speak of around 15,000 inhabitants in the entire constituency of Karasburg.

Table grape cultivation in Aussenkehr

A large-scale irrigation project made Aussenkehr one of the fastest growing settlements in Namibia. At times, up to 20,000 people live here. Table grapes are grown here on over 3000 hectares (as of 2017/18) of irrigation land, primarily for export to Europe . Aussenkehr is the largest table grape growing area in the southern hemisphere .

Infrastructure

Aussenkehr is located at the southern end of the main road C37 , which ends here on the Noordoewer - Aus road .

After the settlement initially had no public facilities, a clinic and a primary school have now been set up. There are also retail outlets and service facilities for local supplies. The development of a larger residential area northeast of the thoroughfare began.

tourism

In addition to the cultivation of table grapes, there are approaches for a tourist development of the place. The immediate vicinity of Aussenkehr offers gorges of particular tourist interest . Several accommodations are available in the area for overnight stays.

The Fish River Canyon is 50 kilometers north of Aussenkehr .
