Aus is a settlement in the south-west African state of Namibia . It belongs to the constituency of Bersheba in the administrative region of Karas .

history

The name of the place comes from the Khoi and means "big snake".

During the German colonial era , the Schutztruppe maintained a base here . After the surrender of the German troops on July 8, 1915, the South African army maintained an internment camp in Aus , where around 1,550 German prisoners of war were interned from 1915 to 1919.

Radio station off

At the beginning of the First World War in South West Africa , the Germans built a replacement radio station in Aus because the coastal radio station in Lüderitzbucht had to be cleared on September 14, 1914. With its location and strong fortifications, Aus was well suited to withstand a siege for a long time. Radio operations began in Aus on September 15th. In The First World War in the protected area is:

“Two antenna towers with a height of 50 m were built in Aus. A three-wire T-antenna was hung between the towers . The station had almost a similar performance as that in Lüderitzbucht. The communication with the English radio station Slangkop and with the newly established English radio station in Lüderitzbucht was perfect. The French station Tabou (Ivory Coast) was less audible than from the earlier Lüderitzbuchter station. On the other hand, the ship radio stations on the Angolan as well as on the southwest African coast and on the east coast in the Indian Ocean up to the level of Durban were easy to understand. The task of the station in Aus was to listen to press reports and to transmit unencrypted English orders to the governor immediately. It also enabled quick contact with the Union government in Pretoria and the British-South African command posts. This enabled information about prisoners to be exchanged. In addition, the station in Aus could also disrupt radio traffic. It helped to re-establish contact by radio via the Windhoek and Tsumeb stations on routes where the telegraph line was broken. The station worked for a relatively long time and was only dismantled by the Schutztruppe on March 27, 1915 after they had evacuated the place. Anything that could not be removed was blown up. Otherwise the rest was brought to Tsumeb. "

Geography and climate

Aus is located at an altitude of 1485  m above sea level, 125 kilometers east of the coastal town of Lüderitz and 230 kilometers west of Keetmanshoop in the Namib Desert . The place is on the edge of the Huib Plateau . In winter it can get very cold here, but precipitation rarely falls in the Namib Desert. Nevertheless, Aus is one of the few places in Namibia where it snows occasionally (once every two to three years).

Economy and Infrastructure

Aus is located on the B4 national road and the Lüderitzbahn from Lüderitz to Keetmanshoop . Since the track bed between Aus and Lüderitz is currently unusable, the regular traffic from Keetmanshoop - exclusively freight traffic - ends in Aus today. A reopening of the Aus – Lüderitz line was planned for 2012. The place has an airfield with two unpaved runways (runway 11/29 with 1430 m and runway 16/34 with 1100 m).

Aus is a popular place to stay for tourists and has its own tourist information center, the Aus Tourist Center, as well as several hotels, including the traditional Bahnhof Hotel Aus and the Klein-Aus-Vista -Lodge. The desert horse habitat is about 20 km west of Aus .

Culture and sights

Every year on January 27th, the birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm II is celebrated in Aus , as the history of the place is closely linked to the German Kaiser. The Kaiser Wilhelm II monument , erected in 1913 to commemorate his 25th anniversary of the throne, is located at Aus train station .
