Milan Bandić [ ˈmǐˑlɑn ˈbâːndit͡ɕ ] pronunciation ? / i (born November 22, 1955 in Donji Mamići , zu Grude , Yugoslavia , today Bosnia-Herzegovina ) is a Croatian politician and former chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP) in the Zagreb district. In June 2017 he was elected mayor of Zagreb for the sixth time . Audio file / audio sample

Live and act

In 1974 he moved to Zagreb. He was elected mayor there for the first time in 2000. In 2002, while drunk, Bandić caused a traffic accident and hit the road; after he was caught, he tried to bribe a police officer. As a result of this process, he had to give up his office. He ran again three years later and won with the SDP in November 2005 ; since then he has been mayor of Zagreb again.

After Ivica Račan's death , he sought the presidency of the entire SDP, but had to admit defeat to Zoran Milanović . Since that election, Bandić was considered to be Milanović's greatest party rival. Its influence is underpinned by the economic strength of the capital. In 2004, Zagreb generated more than 30 percent of Croatia's gross domestic product ; the city budget for 2007 was 7.38 billion Croatian kuna . In 2011 too, Zagreb contributed a third of the Croatian gross national product.

Because of his decision to run as an independent candidate for the 2009/10 presidential election, he was expelled from the party. With 14.83 percent, he got just ahead of Andrija Hebrang , the candidate of the HDZ , in the runoff election, in which he was defeated by the candidate of his former party, Ivo Josipović .

Because of his ambitions and projects, Bandić has a dubious reputation. In 2015, he was temporarily in custody on charges of corruption. He praises infrastructure and construction measures such as the redesign of the Ljubljanska avenija (now also Zagrebačka avenija), the construction of the Zagreb Arena and the connection of Zagreb and Velika Gorica with the Heimat Bridge, which opened in May 2007, as successes .

family

Bandić divorced his wife Vesna in 1996; but he still lives with her in Stara Peščenica . They have a daughter together.
