Andrija Hebrang ( ˈandrija ˈxebraŋk ; born January 27, 1946 in Belgrade , Yugoslavia) is a Croatian politician , doctor and professor at the medical faculty in Zagreb .

Life

Andrija Hebrang was born in 1946 as the son of the Croatian-Yugoslav politician of the same name, Andrija Hebrang . His father was removed from political life by the regime in 1948 after the break between Stalin and Tito and was subsequently imprisoned; According to the regime, he committed suicide in prison, although a murder appears much more likely. Andrija Hebrang's mother was sentenced to twelve years in prison after her father's death because she refused to testify against her husband. The family was then subjected to severe reprisals and was no longer allowed to use the family name.

Scientific career

Hebrang graduated from the University of Zagreb with a degree in medicine and a doctorate in medicine. He then specialized in the areas of medical radiology and oncology. He published 140 specialist articles, 34 of them abroad, and wrote six specialist books. In addition to numerous lectures at various congresses, he was visiting professor at universities in Germany and America. Since 1982 he has lectured at the Medical University in Zagreb.

Political career

Andrija Hebrang was not active in any political organization until 1990. Since 1990 he has been a member of the conservative HDZ . During the Croatian War he was Minister of Health and a member of the state crisis team. During this time he was responsible for all humanitarian and health issues, including the organization of care for the numerous refugees. He personally organized a convoy to evacuate 104 wounded from the hospital in Vukovar during the siege .

From 1996 he was Vice President of the HDZ during the first government under Franjo Tuđman , with whom he worked very closely. In 1998 he was appointed Minister of Defense, but a short time later fell out with the government and gave up all offices, including the parliamentary mandate, and retired from political life for a period of four years. Only at the request of the future head of government Ivo Sanader (HDZ) did he return to politics in 2002 and helped him in the election campaign in the same year. After the HDZ was elected, he became the government's vice president for economics and health minister. Andrija Hebrang is currently Vice President of the HDZ.

Hebrang was a candidate for the HDZ in the presidential election in December 2009 , achieved third place in the first ballot with a good 12 percent of the votes and thus did not make it into the runoff election.
