The Seoul International Marathon ( Korean 서울 국제 마라톤 대회 ), also known as the Seoul Marathon or after the organizer of the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper , Dong-A Seoul International Marathon , is a marathon in the South Korean metropolis of Seoul that has been running since 1931 and has been around since 1964 the classic distance of 42.195 km leads. The event takes place in March.

history

In 1931 the run in Keijō was launched by the newspaper Tōa Nippō , as it was called until it was renamed in 1945. 14 participants started over the distance of 50 Ri (23.3 km). In 1933 the route was extended once to 15 miles (24.1 km) due to road construction work. This year, son Kee-chung won , who had finished second the previous year.

After his son, who had to start under the Japanese name Son Kitei , won gold at the 1936 Olympic Games marathon , Dōa Nippō retouched the Japanese flag from the photo of the Olympic champion. The Japanese provincial government then imposed a temporary ban on the newspaper, so that the run was canceled in 1937. In 1938 it was continued again with a route length of approx. 25 km. It did not take place between 1941 and 1953 due to the war. In 1964 the course was extended to the marathon distance.

Japanese runners have been involved in the run since the 1970s. In 1982, after Seoul had won the bid for the Summer Olympics , runners came from non-Asian countries for the first time. In the following years separate pre-Olympic international marathons took place in which the following athletes won:

As a dress rehearsal for the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Cup marathon was held in Seoul on April 11th and 12th, 1987 . Ahmed Salah from Djibouti won the men in 2:10:55, while Kazakh Soja Ivanova, who started for the Soviet Union , won the women in 2:30:39.

In 1992 the marathon was moved to Chuncheon and from 1993 to 1999 it was held in Gyeongju . In 2000 he was brought back to the capital while the Gyeongju Marathon was launched as an autumn race for the Masters category. In 2007 this run was upgraded to the Gyeongju International Marathon through the participation of elite runners .

Since 2002, the Seoul International Marathon has had inner-city competition with the JoongAng Seoul Marathon , which the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo organizes in November.
