The Beppu-Ōita Marathon ( Japanese 別 府 大分 毎 日 マ ラ ソ ン , Beppu Ōita Mainichi Marason; official English name Beppu-Ōita Mainichi Marathon ), in Japan often also abbreviated to Betsudai Marathon ( 別 大 マ ラ ソ ン , Betsudai ), is a Marathon that has been taking place between the Japanese cities of Beppu and Ōita since 1952 . After running over 35 km in the first year, the full distance of 42.195 km has been covered since 1953. The course is a turning point route between the two cities. The start was in Beppu until 1983, and since then in Ōita. The race is organized by the Ōita athletics federation. The main sponsor is the Mainichi Shimbun .
Twice a world record was set up at this event: 1963 by Tōru Terasawa and 1978 by Shigeru Sō .
For the 60th edition in 2011, the qualification norms were relaxed considerably and women were allowed for the first time since 1981. Previously a marathon time of 2:50 hours was required for participation, now 3:30 hours are sufficient.
