1912 Summer Olympics competitions

The Östermalms idrottsplats , often abbreviated as Östermalms IP , ( German : Sportplatz Östermalm) is a sports facility in the Stockholm district of Östermalm . The stadium, a few meters away from the Stockholm Olympic Stadium , was the venue for various competitions as part of the 1912 Summer Olympics .

history

In September 1906, the then Swedish King Oskar II opened the sports field. Since this was intended as a sports facility for the 1912 Summer Olympics, some renovation and renovation work had to be carried out in advance of the international sports festival. For this purpose, from the autumn of 1911, in particular, the grandstands and running tracks were partially rebuilt, the pavilion on the site was renovated, a tennis facility with two fields was built, and the soccer field was leveled and replanted.

During the Olympic tournament, horse riding , fencing , modern pentathlon and tennis competitions were held on the site , and the facility was also host to baseball competitions . In addition, the sports facility served as a training ground for athletes for the athletics competitions held in the Olympic Stadium .

The sports field was later used as a playing area for ice hockey games in winter and a speed skating rink was added. In 1950 the final of the Swedish ice hockey championship was played here, in which Djurgården Hockey won the second championship title in the club's history.

Djurgårdens IF played in the stadium between 1906 and 1911 , but then moved to the Olympic Stadium via Tranebergs IP in the late 1930s. After the field had been used by the ice hockey team until the 1950s, before they moved to the Hovet , no higher-class sport was played here. Above all, the youth football teams of Djurgårdens IF and the women's football team of Djurgårdens IF subsequently used the facility, which is now covered with artificial grass.

Planned new stadium construction

Since the Olympic Stadium no longer met the further developed requirements for the Allsvenskan , Djurgårdens IF was only allowed to play there until 2013. Therefore, at the beginning of the decade, the club considered the construction of a pure football stadium on the area of Östermalm IP with up to 18,000 spectators. The plans were discarded in December 2011, with particular reference to the general economic conditions and experience with the construction of the new Malmö stadium . Since the Tele2 Arena opened in summer 2013, the club and local competitor Hammarby IF have been using the stadium in the south of Stockholm in the Enskede-Årsta-Vantör district for their home games.
