The Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Center is a multi-purpose hall in Melbourne , Australia .

History and use

The foundation stone for the building was laid in October 1954. The arena was built by Bill Irwin as an engineer and McDougall & Ireland as the construction company. The hall was designed by the unique association KPJP, consisting of the architects Kevin Borland, Peter McIntyre and John and Phyllis Murphy. The construction cost was £ 350,000 . The building was opened on November 22, 1956. Renovations for the hall with an audience capacity of 7,200 people took place in 1983 as well as in 2003 and 2013. The 1956 Summer Olympics took place here for the most part in the disciplines of water sports ( swimming , diving , water polo ). After the games have been played, basketball and tennis competitions also take place here.

In 1987, Eric Clapton played in the hall as part of the Clapton and Friends Tour in front of 7,125 people.
