De Jesús became famous for attempting to cheat during the 1984 Games. Madeline was registered as a jumper in the long jump and participant in the 4 x 400 meter relay at these games . After injuring herself in the long jump and not feeling fit anymore, she let her twin sister Margaret compete under her name.
