Marita Payne-Wiggins

Marita Payne-Wiggins (born Payne ; born October 7, 1960 in Barbados ) is a former Canadian sprinter of Barbadian origin who had her greatest successes in the 400-meter run .

Life

At the Pan American Games in 1979 in San Juan, she was seventh over 400 m and won bronze with the Canadian team in the 4 x 400 meter relay .

In 1982 she reached the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane over 400 m and won silver with the Canadian team in the 4 x 100 meter relay . The following year she won over 200 m silver at the Universiade and was fifth over 400 m at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 . She also took fourth place there with the Canadian 4 x 400 meter relay and fifth with the 4 x 100 meter relay.

She experienced the high point of her career at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. As the final runner, she led the Canadian 4 x 400 meter relay to the silver medal together with Charmaine Crooks , Jillian Richardson and Molly Killingbeck . She won another medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay. The Canadian team also took second place in the line-up Angela Bailey , Payne-Wiggins, Angella Taylor and France Gareau . In both cases, the Canadians only had to surrender to the US relay. In addition, Payne was fourth in the 400-meter run. Your time of 49.91 s from the finals is still today (April 2010) as a Canadian national record.

In 1986 she was fourth over 400 m at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and won the Canadian 4-by-400-meter relay.

In 1987 she was seventh over 400 m at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis and won silver with the Canadian 4-by-400-meter relay. At the World Championships in Rome , Payne-Wiggins finished fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay like four years earlier. She failed over 400 m in the semifinals. She met the same fate at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. With the 4 x 400 meter relay, however, she was again in the final. However, the Canadian team did not reach the goal there.

In 1981 and 1984 she became Canadian champion and starting for Florida State University in 1982 and 1984 NCAA champion.

Marita Payne-Wiggins attended Florida State University and is married to former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins . With Mitchell, Payne-Wiggins has six children, including one of basketball's greatest talents, Andrew Wiggins . Andrew was first drawn by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 and has played in the NBA since then, currently for the Golden State Warriors .
