Machettira Raju Poovamma (born June 5, 1990 in Gonikoppal , Karnataka ) is an Indian athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

MR Poovamma gained her first international experience at the Junior Asian Championships 2006 in Taipei , where she was eliminated in the first round over 400 meters and won the bronze medal with the Indian 4 x 400 meter relay. But she also qualified for the Junior World Championships in Beijing , where she was eliminated with 56.39 s in the lead. With the season she was eliminated in 3: 45.42 min in the preliminary round. A year later, she finished seventh at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava and fifth in the Indian sprint relay (1000 meters). In October she won the bronze medal with the relay at the Indoor Asian Games in Macau and was eliminated in the first round of the individual competition. In 2008 she again took part in the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , but again failed to qualify for the finals in both the individual and the Indian relay. At the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune , she won the silver medal in the 400 meters and gold with the Indian 4-by-400-meter relay.

In 2013 she won the gold medal with the relay at the Asian Championships in Pune and the silver medal behind the Chinese Zhao Yanmin in 53.37 seconds . She qualified for the World Championships in Moscow , where she was eliminated with the relay with 3: 38.81 min in advance. The following year she reached the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the individual competition to the semi-finals and was disqualified in the final with the relay. At the beginning of October she won the bronze medal in the individual discipline and gold with the Indian relay at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea . In 2015 she won the silver medal in both disciplines at the Asian Championships in Wuhan . In addition, she took part again with the relay at the World Championships in the National Stadium in Beijing. Despite the season's best performance, the season was eliminated in advance .

In 2016 she won two gold medals at the South Asian Games in Guwahati and qualified with the relay at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was also eliminated in the preliminary round . In 2017 MR Poovamma took part in the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar . There she finished fourth in 53.36 s. In addition, she won the gold medal with the 400-by-400-meter table in front of the relays from Vietnam and Japan. She received with the relay a bye for the World Championships in London , where she was disqualified in the first round . In 2018 she again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , eliminated in the first round in 53.72 seconds and finished seventh in the season in the finals. At the end of August she won the Asian Games in Jakarta in 3: 28.72 minutes with the Indian relay and silver in the first mixed competition. In 2019 the Bahraini relay team was disqualified for a doping offense and awarded the gold medal to India. The following year she secured the bronze medal in 53.21 seconds at the Asian Championships in Doha behind the Bahraini Salwa Eid Naser and Elina Michina from Kazakhstan. In addition, she won the silver medal behind Bahrain with the Indian women's relay in 3: 32.21 minutes and the mixed relay. Shortly thereafter, she retired from the World Relays in Yokohama with the women's relay with 3: 31.93 min in the preliminary round. The season was able to qualify for the World Championships in Doha, but did not reach the final with 3: 29.42 min.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013 Poovamma became Indian champion over 400 meters and in 2015 and 2017 with the 4 x 400 meter relay. She completed a business management degree at the SDM College of Business Management .
