Letesenbet Gidey ( Amharic ለተሰንበት ግደይ ; born March 20, 1998 ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner .
Athletic career
Letesenbet Gidey gained her first international experience at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang , where she won the gold medal both in the individual competition in the U20 age group and with the team. Then she finished fourth in the 3000 meter run at the Youth World Championships in Cali in 9: 04.64 minutes . Two years later she defended her two gold medals at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships in Kampala and qualified in the 5000-meter run for the World Championships in London , where she finished eleventh with 15: 04.99 minutes in the final . At the 2019 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus , she won the bronze medal in the adult class in 36:24 minutes and secured the gold medal with the team. At the end of September she won the silver medal over 10,000 meters behind the Dutchman Sifan Hassan at the World Championships in Doha with a new personal best of 30: 21.23 minutes . In mid-November, Gidey set a new world record over 15 km at the Zevenheuvelenloop in Nijmegen . In 44:20 min she is the first woman to stay under 45 minutes and improved the previous mark of the Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei by more than a minute.
In 2019 , Gidey became the Ethiopian champion in the 10,000 meter run.
