Alan Posener (born October 8, 1949 in London ) is a British-German journalist . He is the son of the architectural historian Julius Posener .

Life

Posener's father was a liberal German Jew with “sympathies for Christianity”. His mother came from an Anglo-Scottish family and was an "Anglican agnostic with a weakness for astrology". He grew up in England , Malaysia and Germany .

Posener studied German and English at the Free University of Berlin and the Ruhr University Bochum . He was active as a cadre of the Communist Student Union and the Maoist KPD-AO from 1970 to 1977. He used the code name Kurt Schmid at times . In 1975 he joined the union and is still a member of ver.di today . After the state examination he worked as a teacher both at the Kant Gymnasium and at the Martin Buber High School in Berlin-Spandau . According to his own statements, he left the school service “out of boredom”.

In 1987 he wrote the Rowohlt monograph on John Lennon . This was followed by monographs on John F. Kennedy , Elvis Presley , William Shakespeare , Franklin D. Roosevelt and finally Mary, the mother of Jesus . Posener also wrote a “duography” about Stalin and Roosevelt (EVA) and a “couples” biography about John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy (Rowohlt Berlin). He was a textbook author for Ernst Klett Verlag for several years .

From 1999 to 2004 he worked for the world , first as an author, then as an editor . From 2004 to 2008 he was commentary chief of Welt am Sonntag . He now works for this newspaper as a correspondent for politics and society. When Berlin's Kochstrasse was to be renamed Rudi-Dutschke-Strasse in 2005 , he took a firm stand against it. Rudi Dutschke thought nothing of “capitalism and consumption, liberalism and parliamentarism”, it was no coincidence that his colleague Horst Mahler - at that time a member of the same KPD as Posener - “ended up with the NPD ”.

In May 2007, Posener threw in his blog on BBC News the image editor in chief Kai Diekmann "hypocrisy" before and wrote that the Bild newspaper , the "Operating the basest instincts." After scolding colleagues at Axel Springer-Verlag , which publishes both Bild and Die Welt , the entry in Posener's blog was removed from the publisher's website within a few hours. The topic became public through reporting on the process in Bildblog and other online media.

A controversy arose between Posener and the FAZ editor Lorenz Jäger after Jäger had sharply attacked Posener in a newspaper article. Posener was the regular author of the weblog Dieachse des Guten , until Dirk Maxeiner , Henryk M. Broder and Michael Miersch terminated his collaboration in May 2009 .

In his 2009 book entitled Benedict's Crusade , he considers Pope Benedict XVI. a " crusade against the Enlightenment " before. This book was published in 2011 in an expanded and updated paperback edition under the title The Dangerous Pope . Posener not only criticizes the pontificate of Benedict XVI, but is generally of the opinion: "Religion is bad for people".

In 2009/10 Posener held a weekly dispute with the editor-in-chief of the online magazine The European , Alexander Görlach , on religious and ethical issues.
