Deutschland pro Papa (DpP) is a Catholic lay movement from Germany whose main object is loyalty to the Pope . The more precise name of the association was until November 2013: “Germany pro Papa - Solidarity with Pope Benedict XVI e. V. “, after being renamed, the name of the association Pro Papa - Solidarity with the Pope e. V. The first chairperson is Sabine Beschmann , who, as the organizer of the association, was awarded the Pater Werenfried Prize by the Church in Need .

Emergence

The initiative goes back to a large Pope rally in Rome on May 20, 2010 with more than 200,000 participants. Sabine Beschmann (Chair) and Regina Steinert took up the idea and wanted to establish a similar initiative permanently in Germany. Initially, communication began on June 1st via a group on Facebook . After the first rallies in Cologne and Munich during the summer, the association was founded on September 26, 2010.

Goals and Positions

The conservative lay group in the Catholic Church was launched in mid-2010 as a reaction to the ongoing and sometimes excessive criticism that Pope Benedict XVI. was met, founded. According to the initiative, the aim of the initiative is to strengthen the original Catholic base and to stand up for Catholics who are loyal to the Pope in order to counter the division within the Catholic Church in Germany. The unification of all Catholics is also a goal of the movement.

The association wants to show that there are many more Catholics loyal to Rome in Germany than is perceived by the public.

By expressly collaborating with the bishops, the movement clearly distinguishes itself from other lay initiatives within the Catholic Church in Germany. She expressly does not want to act critically against Catholic officials.

The name change in November 2013 should show that the support does not refer to a single person, but should apply to all popes.

activities

The initiative has already carried out solidarity rallies and other events in the various German Catholic dioceses several times. The first events took place on July 10, 2010, the Pope's name day, public solidarity rallies in Cologne and Munich , in which around 4,000 people took part.

With a postcard campaign Germany pro Papa expressed solidarity with Benedict XVI during the Vatileaks affair. called: In three days more than 3000 participants sent postcards offered by the association to the Holy See, on which a picture of the Pope with the slogan “Pope Benedict, we stand by you!” was depicted. This action was also noticed in a short interview as part of the weekly TV program Gott und die Welt on ARD .

On the occasion of the Pope's visit to Germany on November 16, 2011, chairwoman Sabine Beschmann took part in a discussion as part of the weekly talk show Nachtcafe of the SWR , as the association's representative.

In addition to Diocesan Bishop Josef Cardinal Meisner and Auxiliary Bishop (em.) Klaus Dick , Catholic journalists Martin Lohmann and Michael Hesemann also took part in a kick-off event for the Year of Faith in Cologne on October 13, 2012 .

As a reaction to the resignation of the Pope, Germany gave a "spiritual thanksgiving and farewell concert for Pope Benedict XVI." With his brother Georg Ratzinger as guest of honor.
