Uwe Heinz Steimle (born June 20, 1963 in Dresden ) is a German cabaret artist and actor . Its characteristic is its Saxon dialect . He became known as Chief Inspector Jens Hinrichs in the TV series Polizeiruf 110 .

Life

Origin and youth

Steimle grew up in Dresden- Trachau . Both parents were unofficial employees of the Ministry for State Security of the GDR . His father was a professional sergeant (most recently as a staff sergeant) in the armored force of the National People's Army , then a porter in the Bundeswehr ; the mother worked in a state-owned packaging company, in VEB Polypack Dresden. Both parents died in 1992, a few years after reunification . Steimle did competitive sport in his youth (best performance in 100-meter run 11.2 seconds). After school, he initially studied industrial blacksmith in stainless steel Freital . He then studied at the “Hans Otto” theater school in Leipzig .

cabaret

In 1989 Steimle became a member of the Dresdner cabaret Herkuleskeule .

The suitcase word " Ostalgie " goes back to Steimle's program of the same name from 1992 and came in 9th in the election for the word of the year the following year . With the Leipzig Tom Pauls he created the characters Günther Zieschong (represented by himself) and Ilse Bähnert ( Pauls). Steimle and Pauls appeared with these characters in the program Ostalgie , which was produced for regional programs of the MDR . Later Steimle's first solo project Günther alone at home came about , in which he let Zieschong perform alone. After Uns fracht ja keener , Steimle brought both characters to life again with new texts in his program Mich fracht ja Eener . Steimle is also known as the impersonator Erich Honecker ; this parody is often an encore in his appearances.

Between 2007 and 2010, Steimle was several times a guest in cabaret programs Neues aus der Anstalt, alongside Urban Priol and Georg Schramm . He also took part in the satirical program Kanzleramt Pforte D on MDR as Günter Zieschong .

Since 2017 he has appeared in the Mir san Mir program together with the Bavarian cabaret artist Helmut Schleich . He can also be seen with several solo programs (e.g. Heimatstunde , FeinKOST ) on numerous cabaret stages .

theatre

From 1991 to 1994 he was a member of the Dresden State Theater . Further engagements also took him to Halle and Erfurt .

Police call 110

From 1993 to 2009, Steimle determined Jens Hinrichs as chief inspector in the television series Polizeiruf 110 . With a total of four changing partners, he was the second longest-serving police call commissioner on ARD with 31 episodes.

In 2005, Steimle, together with Hübchen and author Beate Langmaack, received the Grimme Prize for the further development of the series. On the occasion of the dismissal of the Hinrichs police call, the taz television critic Rainer Braun counted Steimle “among the most prominent and versatile representatives of his guild”.

When in 2008 the NDR announced the end of the investigative duo for the following year, Steimle protested, spoke of a "stab in the back" and "professional ban" and was convinced that he had been "removed" for "political reasons" and because of alleged "rebellion". He had previously voted for Peter Sodann for the Left Party as a member of the Federal Assembly and often complained about the "police call". The broadcaster justified its decision with the fact that the Schwerin police call was simply "told off" after 15 years. Media and even police call partner Eitner said that Steimle was hyping himself up as a conspiracy victim. Steimle, on the other hand, called for a public debate with ARD program director Volker Herres and demanded that the ARD talk show "Anne Will" be broadcast on Sundays . Herres commented on the decision that “roles end, that's normal, great actors stay”, and praised Steimle as “remarkable actors”, whose “talents he very much appreciate”. Steimle claimed that Herres had called him a " troublemaker ", and compared this with the language of National Socialism or the expression of an NVA political officer . Even after that, Steimle could still be seen in various programs on ARD.

Further appearances in film and television

In 1988 Steimle appeared for the first time in front of a camera alongside Ulrich Thein in Thomas Langhoff's film adaptation of The Fishermen's Revolt in St. Barbara

In Edgar Reitz ' Heimat 3 - Chronicle of a Turning Point , Steimle was also seen in 2004 in the role of Gunnar Brehme. He played a killer in the 2004 two-part TV series The Account . In 2008 he was seen as the leading actor in the television comedy Suddenly Millionaire .

In 2009, Steimle played the Stasi Lieutenant Haack in the film Liebe Mauer . In 2011, he played the main character Rolf Anschütz in the movie Sushi in Suhl , in which the story of the first Japanese restaurant in the GDR was filmed .

From 2013 to 2019 presented in Steimle MDR Steimles world . He drove a Wartburg 312 together with Michael Seidel through the transmission area and visited people living there. With them he talked about their stories before and after the political change and peaceful revolution .

author

In 2006 he published the audio book Der Zauberer von Ost about the Green Vault in Dresden. It is the first title in the series of the same name in which the 2007 audio book about the history of the Dresden Christstollen Do you hear it smell? and in 2008 Hans Christian Andersen's report on a trip to Saxon Switzerland , the latter read by Walter Niklaus , were published.

In addition, other books with satirical texts were published, most of which deal with his homeland, current politics and reunification , and are also available as audio books.

Political commitment

In 2009 Steimle was named by the Left Party as a member of the Federal Assembly and elected by the Saxon State Parliament. In this function he took part in the 2009 election of the German Federal President .

In April and May 2009, Steimle protested in the costume of his alter ego Günther Zieschong with Ilse Bähnert (Tom Pauls) against the urban development of Dresden by placing a planted toilet bowl with the slogan "Shit built, city messed up" on the Dresden Postplatz, despite official Reminder to repeat the action shortly afterwards at the Altmarkt. Later he and other opponents of urban building policy distributed planted toilet bowls throughout the city.

On May 8, 2017, Steimle erected a two-meter-high replica of the Dresden television tower with a golden crescent moon as Zieschong on Dresden's Neumarkt , which he called "Rischdsche Gunsd" ( Saxon for "real art"). He saw the action as his humorous statement against the xenophobic reputation of Dresden and interpreted the sculpture himself as Dresden's largest minaret, from which the cry "Dresden is big" could resound. At the same time it was an advertisement for the citizens' initiative, which aims to reopen the viewing platform of the television tower and of which Steimle is the most prominent representative. Steimle also regards contemporary art on Neumarkt, the memorial for the permanent new beginning of Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth , as paternalism and described his object as a "counter monument" and a "Fühlmal", with which he "bridges the gap between the camps" want to build.

In February 2018, Steimle was appointed patron of the Ecumenical Peace Decade , but was dismissed after a few days because his statements “do not reveal any clear distancing from right-wing populist positions or the Pegida movement”. His "statements about Israel and the USA are one-sided, do not do justice to the complexity and blur the line between anti-American and anti-Semitic positions". The organizers admitted that they had not done enough research on Steimle. Only through a "wave of sometimes violent criticism, especially from [...] Saxon [...] partners as well as initiatives that work against right-wing extremism and right-wing populism", did one become aware of the problem. Steimle denied sympathizing with Pegida and saw "peace standing in the rain" without his patronage. Steimle told the Bild newspaper: “The whole thing borders on character assassination, it's total nonsense! I am an avowed leftist, I even voted for them. ”A few days later he was next to Thilo Sarrazin , Uwe Tellkamp , Vera Lengsfeld , Eva Herman , Henryk M. Broder , Matthias Matussek and other first signatories of the“ Joint Declaration 2018 ”, which Germany“ illegal mass immigration damaged ”and expressed solidarity with the participants of a“ women's march ”from the environment of the Alternative for Germany .

Steimle advocated talking to supporters of the Alternative für Deutschland and Pegida. “If 25 percent of the people vote for the AfD, then you can't ignore them,” Steimle said in an interview with the Superillu . He wanted to be a "bridge builder". The fact that Steimle was stamped as right instead reminded him "of the dark GDR times, where many artists felt the same".

Youtube channel

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he broadcast the format “Steimle's World Evening Greeting ” from the cellar of his house on the outskirts of Dresden every evening on his own YouTube channel.

Controversies about Steimle

Steimle's remarks about the turning point , which he basically calls Kehre , have been criticized several times. Marked Richard Weber in Tagesspiegel Steimles posts in the talk show Tough but fair on the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall as a "verbal [n] waterfall of personal feelings, prejudices and half-truths." He also certified Steimle that he only had “contempt for refugees from the Republic ” and criticized his statement that the “GDR 1989 [had] no economic problems and was by no means bankrupt”. According to Alexander Jürgs ( Die Welt ), Steimle appeared "several times as a fanatical Ostalgiker" during an appearance on the show Menschen bei Maischberger . Steimle's political demands contributed to the program becoming "very confused, very aimless".

Regarding Steimle's appearance in Kreuztal in January 2015, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung noted that his legendary parodies of Honecker resonated with criticism, but clearly more affection than for his compatriot Heiko Maas , whom Steimle called “flat-nosed pliers” especially after his criticism of Pegida "And" ass ". Steimle presented "as a supporter" of Pegida, where he "heard no criticism of Islam, but saw many Russian flags". According to Steimle, the movement only wanted to “draw attention to a completely wrong policy”. Steimle called the Bundestag , “not ironic” from the WAZ's point of view, as a “work-shy rabble ” that had to go.

After Steimle asked the WDR cabaret show Mitternachtsspitzen in May 2015: "Why do the Americans and Israelis start wars and we Germans are allowed to pay the shit?", Jan-Philipp Hein put this in a series of statements by other cabaret artists in the SHZ , all of which proved that anti-Semitic resentments would live on in German television cabaret disguised as humor. The communication scientist Tobias Jaecker evaluated the statement as an example of the " extremism of the social center ". Steimle made it clear in an interview with Tichys insight in 2019 that he would no longer say the statement that way today. Since visiting Israel with Jewish friends, he has “seen it a little differently”. He condemned Hamas's practice of firing rockets from hospitals or schools in order to direct counter-attacks. The defense of Israel's existence is "perfectly fine," said Steimle.

When Steimle intoned GDR songs such as the Partisans from Amur and the song of the young naturalists in his program “Heimatstunde” in 2015 and the audience immediately sang along, he applauded this with the statement, “Putin would have an easy time here”. Frank Quilitzsch wrote in the Thüringische Landeszeitung that at Steimle you never know “how seriously the joke is meant” and “you also get rid of your own discomfort [laugh]”, and wondered whether “it's just the charm of Saxon [lie] that some ugly memories of the GDR seem like they have been softened ”.

In May 2016, Steimle appeared on the occasion of an interview in a T-shirt made by the right-wing populist magazine Compact and labeled " Ami Go Home ". In one episode of midnight peaks on May 23, 2015 and in one from SchleichFernsehen on July 16, 2016, Steimle named the heute-journal spokeswoman Marietta Slomka in an allusion to the supposedly "remote-controlled" public service media Marionetta Slomka . Amrei Drechsler commented that here, as in other “fun speeches by Steimle”, “compact transverse fronts ” are revealed.

In his 2016 book “Why the donkey is called Martin: News from Martin Luther”, Steimle wrote: “The 'so-called people', no longer a German one in the wishes of the occupation presenter, paid for by ZDF, but also paid the costs for the refugees . Oh, wait no, the German basic language police have forbidden to speak of refugees, this is discriminatory ”. Immediately afterwards he claimed for himself that “[a] church is man [and] his religion is doubt”, and postulated another one for Martin Luther's 95 theses that only consists of the word “humility”. For him, English is the "occupying language", so Great Britain and the USA are "language occupiers".

In September 2016, Steimle met with the CDU city councilor Jörg Schlechte for breakfast. This had previously emerged, among other things, by commenting on a report about a violent refugee with the words "The man can be helped" and a link to the local crematorium and commenting on the former green local politician Andreas Vorrath with what is customary in right-wing extremist circles to dehumanize the political opponent Swear word "tick" had occupied. Schlechte put a picture of the meeting with Steimle on the Internet, which Vorrath commented with the words " Völkisch - anti-Semitic Jammer-Ossi [...] meets CDU racist in Meissen". Steimle and Schlechte then filed a criminal complaint for insult. The Meißen district court cleared Vorrath of the charge in November 2017, referring to a number of Steimle's statements, including the one about the alleged war-instigating Israel at “midnight peaks” and his “tender feeling” for Pegida . According to the court, Vorrath's statements were covered by the right to freedom of expression . Steimle announced an appeal against the judgment, but was not authorized to do so due to criminal procedural reasons. Since the public prosecutor's office declined to appeal, the acquittal became final.

Among other things, in the action on the Dresden Neumarkt, in which Steimle erected a replica of the Dresden television tower, according to the Deutschlandfunk journalist Daniela Mayer Steimle's political change of heart from a previously left to a positioning on the right. Steimle is watching his audience in the east in the mouth and is now politically involved. In addition, Steimle has found a market niche for itself. “If he were to represent a leftist opinion: for refugee policy, for everything that is popular on the left, he would have to fight for his place.” On a leaflet, Steimle asked the observers: “You decide: Is this art or can it also on Neumarkt? ”, which Cornelius Pollmer, Central Germany correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , assessed as“ a certain contempt for art in general ”.

In the episode of Steimle's World broadcast in October 2017 , Steimle appeared in the “ Putin- Vereh-Shirt” and said that in Freiberg Cathedral an unspecified group of people would “poop behind the altar”. In addition, hearsay reported that "in Mülsen [...] the Syrians stole all the trout from the river". The Leipziger Volkszeitung commented that one was not sure whether "absurd and often fake horror reports about asylum seekers should be taken here" or whether that was meant differently. This is quite typical for Steimle. After the broadcast, the “news” spread via relevant internet portals and social media accounts that refugees were also behind the alleged pollution of the cathedral .

In June 2018 Steimle gave a controversially discussed interview with the new right-wing weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit , in which he claimed: “The truth is that we don't have our own politics because we are an occupied country”. Germany is not a sovereign state, but “occupied territory of the USA”. Steimle also stated that public service broadcasting was not remote from the state. "By now everyone knows that about Atlantic Bridge -member Claus Kleber of Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler , the FRG, along with his Marionetta Slomka." These conspiracy theories originating from the Reich Citizenship Movement were publicly rejected by Steimle's main station Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk . He announced that he would personally evaluate the statements with Steimle. Steimle then expected that the broadcaster would part with him, but the latter merely gave him to understand “that the art form satire was not recognizable for [the MDR] and presumably many other readers in the context he had chosen ". Steimle agreed to clarify the matter. In another interview for Junge Freiheit, however, he practiced scolding against the media, accusing his critics of taking his statements out of context, and claiming the freedom of art for his positions. He then expressed incomprehension for having to apologize and justify himself. The Süddeutsche Zeitung noted that the MDR was in a bind: A separation from Steimle would not only mean the loss of a quota provider, but would also make him a martyr among rights and conspiracy theorists.

On Whit Monday 2019, the aforementioned Meißen CDU city councilor Jörg Schlechte posted a photo with Steimle who was wearing a t-shirt with the words " Kraft durch Freunde " in Fraktur , according to Matthias Meisner from Tagesspiegel, an obviously intended reference to the Nazi organization Strength through joy . The MDR commented on this by saying that one should make sure that in the programs that one produces with him, "his satire is also recognizable as such". However, Uwe Steimle acted here as a "private person". Steimle himself described the photo in a statement as a "mistake" because it was used to poke at political opponents. He wanted to create "something new, positive" out of a burdened saying, nothing more. For an interview with Superillu in May 2020, he again “intentionally” put on the T-shirt to show that he “stood by it”. “'Strength through friends' was the life motto of Werner Finck , a cabaret artist who was in a concentration camp in the Third Reich,” says Steimle.

In December 2019, the MDR announced that the program Steimles Welt would not be continued in 2020. The reason for this is that, according to MDR television director Wolf-Dieter Jacobi , Steimle has "repeatedly and massively questioned the basic values of public broadcasting" in public statements . The relationship of trust is simply no longer there for a good and respectful collaboration, according to the MDR. An online petition for resumption of the show was signed by over 50,000 people. After Steimle initially did not comment on his release, he defended his disloyalty to the MDR in an interview with the Superillu. "A satirist does not have to be loyal, but rather to tear open the wounds in society so that they can be seen," says Steimle.
