Eva Herman, 2009

Eva Herman (real name: Eva Bischoff ; born November 9, 1958 in Emden as Eva Feldker ) is a German author and former television presenter . From 1988 to 2006 she was news anchor for the Tagesschau and until September 2007 moderated various television programs for Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). As a publicist , she appears through right-wing populist and conspiracy-theoretical theses.

childhood and education

Herman was born Eva Feldker and the daughter of a hotelier couple. She grew up with a brother and a sister in Herzberg am Harz . Her father died when she was six years old. After secondary school , she completed vocational training as a hotel clerk in Braunlage , Timmendorfer Strand and Switzerland .

Private

Eva Herman was married four times. In 1981 she married the car dealer Werner Herrmann and took the stage name Eva Herman . After the divorce in 1988, she kept that name. In 1989 she married the television journalist Horst-Wolfgang Bremke , who, like her, worked for NDR. The marriage ended in divorce in 1992. In 1995 she married the producer and director Tom Ockers . In 1997 their son was born. In 2002 the divorce took place. In 2005 she married the hotelier Michael Bischoff, from whom she divorced in 2015. She is in a relationship with Andreas Popp, the operator of the Wissensmanufaktur website , which spreads right-wing conspiracy theories in particular.

Activities for radio and television

At Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich, Herman trained as a journalist from 1983 to 1986 and as a television announcer until 1988. In the meantime, she moderated the programs Radiokantine , Hitkiste , morning program , ARD night program and rush hour with her boss at the time, Thomas Gottschalk, for the radio station Bayern 3 . At the same time, she took over the moderation of news and entertainment programs on Bavarian television , for example BR-on the go and The hot wire. In 1988 she moved to NDR in Hamburg , where she first moderated the broadcasts Am Morning , Plattenkiste and Traumhaft on the NDR 2 radio station . After a casting by Werner Veigel , she was accepted into the Tagesschau team and did her first broadcast in August 1988.

In addition, Herman was regularly seen in entertainment and talk shows . From 1991 to 1995 she led the monthly popular music parade and presented the ARD programs Chorgala (1994–1995), Stars (1995–1998) and the donation gala Ein Herz für Kinder (1996–1997). She continued through the ARD coverage of the international radio exhibition Berlin (1993, 1995, 1997) and the Kieler Woche (1995-2004). From 1995 to 1999 she regularly presented the North German regional magazine DAS! . On January 17, 1997, she and her colleague Bettina Tietjen hosted the “Talk-Illustrierte” Stargeflüster for the first time. This resulted in the talk show Herman and Tietjen in May 1999 . From December 2000 she hosted the NDR quiz show Wer hats Seen? and from February 2003 the talent show of the ARD television lottery Germany's Talents . On the side, Herman also worked for the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche and its nationwide campaign through the chest into the heart .

In 2003, according to an Emnid survey , Herman was the “most popular female presenter in Germany”.

Herman spoke her last daily news on August 24, 2006. She informed the NDR that she wanted to suspend her work as a newscaster for two years because of her work as a book author and the anticipated controversy surrounding her new publication.

Controversy

Eva Herman during a reading in Timmendorfer Strand 2007

From 2006 onwards, some statements by Hermans about the self-image of women, about gender roles and family politics in their books and media led to public controversy and in 2007 finally to the termination of the cooperation by the NDR.

"The Eve Principle" and follow-up books

First in the magazine Cicero and then in her book Das Eva-Prinzip (2006), Herman made feminism responsible for what she saw as unjustifiable role demands on women. This caused low German birth rates ; therefore the Germans are threatened with extinction. Her core theses were sharply criticized by Alice Schwarzer , Thea Dorn , the former Family Minister Renate Schmidt and the entertainer Désirée Nick and others. Thomas Steinfeld (SZ) criticized Herman's thesis that women's emancipation did not make women happy as a banality, and the proposed solution as an unreal, outdated and irretrievable image of the “middle class household during the fifties and sixties”. Eberhard Rathgeb ( FAZ ) criticized the fact that Herman justified the change of gender roles biologically instead of economically and wanted to push women back into a conventional mother and home role, which she had not lived herself.

Herman published a follow-up volume in 2006 Dear Eva Herman: Letters to the author of the Eva principle . Its proceeds should go to the family network association of which she was a member. In her book Das Prinzip Noah's Ark (2007) she complained about the “decomposition process” of families in Germany and again promoted a traditional understanding of the roles of men and women.

Statement on the Nazi era and its consequences

On September 6, 2007, Herman presented her book The Principle Noah's Ark to about 30 journalists , saying:

“We have to put relief and not burden on the families and we have to create justice between childless and large families. And above all, we have to learn to appreciate the image of the mother in Germany again, which unfortunately was abolished with National Socialism and the subsequent 1968 movement . With the 68s, practically everything became that - everything we had in terms of values - [...]; It was a cruel time, that was a completely crazy, highly dangerous politician who led the German people to their ruin, we all know that. But back then it is also what was good, and those are values, these are children, these are mothers, these are families, that is cohesion - that has been abolished. Nothing was allowed to stand still [...] "

A commentator claimed on September 7, 2007 in the Hamburger Abendblatt that Herman had rated Nazi family policy positively:

“In this context, the author made a detour to the Third Reich , because a lot was very bad, z. B. Adolf Hitler , but some things are also very good, e.g. B. the appreciation of the mother, who had abolished the 68ers, and therefore one now has the social salad. "

Other media followed this interpretation. The Bild am Sonntag shortened Hermans statement on September 9, 2007 under the title "Eva Herman praising Hitler's family policies" as:

“It was a cruel time, he was a completely crazy, highly dangerous politician who led the German people to ruin, we all know that. But it's just what was good, these are values, children, mothers, family, solidarity - that was abolished, nothing was allowed to stand still. "

A comment in the FAZ quoted an explanation by Hermans:

"What I wanted to express was that values that also existed before the Third Reich, such as family, children and motherhood, which were also promoted in the Third Reich, were subsequently abolished by the 68ers."

In the same issue, NDR Broadcasting Councilor Sara-Ruth Schumann Herman criticized : She expected an “intelligent presenter” “to put it cleanly.” Michael Fürst, member of the NDR Board of Directors, explained: “If she said this tangled nonsense like that , that speaks for a very simple mind and is historically irresponsible. "

According to the NDR, Herman confirmed her explanation by phone on September 9, 2007 in the Bild am Sonntag to NDR program director Volker Herres . Herres then ended the NDR's collaboration with her and justified it publicly as follows: Herman's writing activity was no longer compatible with her role as a television presenter. She is leading a “Mother's Crusade”, the polarizing effect of which has a negative impact on the programs she moderates. After Herman's planned appearance at a sub-organization of the right-wing populist FPÖ in March 2007, the NDR warned her not to do anything that could damage “her public image as a talk moderator and thus that of the NDR”. But on September 5, 2007, at the international radio exhibition in Berlin, Herman asked the churches to give more frequent talks on the “mandate of men and women”.

On September 10, 2007, WDR broadcast an audio recording of Herman's original statement. The publisher Christian Strasser from the then Pendo Verlag , editor of the then Hermanbuch, regretted “misunderstandings” and “prejudices” of Herman's statements. She did not want to play down the Nazi ideology in any way or even approve it, but reject racism , right-wing radicalism and any kind of discrimination .

On September 11, 2007, Herman said in the Bild newspaper that she apologized for her statements about the Nazi era if she had hurt the feelings of people, especially Nazi victims and their relatives, by doing so. At the same time she confirmed that she had not praised the Nazi family policy and that this had been misrepresented.

In a press release on September 14, 2007, Herman substantiated this accusation: she rejected the Nazi regime at the book launch, warned against ideological abuse of family values in earlier of her books, and in 2005 participated in the “ Laut gegen Nazis ” campaign. Their intention to make a statement was that the 68ers had largely sacrificed the family values that were abused during the Nazi era in the "necessary denazification " process . Three days earlier, the head of “Laut gegen Nazis”, Jörn Menge, had distanced himself from Herman's views, accused her of legitimizing “new right-wing extremist ideas” and asked her to remove the link to the action from her website.

In addition to the announced timely expiry of their contract, the NDR announced an extraordinary termination on September 18 with immediate effect. On September 25, the NDR also terminated any employment relationship with Herman as of December 31, 2007.

On September 9, Herman told Bild am Sonntag: "It's not about Hitler's values, but about basic human values that were abused in the 'Third Reich' and later abolished." On September 12, 2007, she gave the text of her original statement known on their homepage and explained their widespread interpretation by saying that a part of the sentence was intentionally related to the Nazi era and the general statement was reversed into its opposite. So she denied that she had formulated her statement in a misleading manner. In addition, she denied that she had confirmed the alleged quote from the Hamburger Abendblatt to the NDR. However, this had justified his termination with her explanation in the picture on Sunday.

On 28 September 2007 told Herman that she was a lifelong anti-Nazi, and called media reports about her statements as a " smear campaign " and "intentional Liquidate by a conformist partly press." This choice of words in turn criticized the news magazine Der Spiegel as resorting to the language of National Socialism .

Herman has repeatedly spoken out publicly about her Christian faith. At the Forum of German Catholics in Fulda on October 6, 2007, she gave a lecture and found approval for her statements on gender roles in marriage and family. The Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs Alois Rhiel (CDU) had refused Herman's appearance and resigned as patron of the forum in protest against Herman's speech. The Central Council of Jews in Germany also protested against Herman's appearance.

On October 9, 2007, Herman was a guest alongside Senta Berger , Margarethe Schreinemakers and Mario Barth on the Johannes B. Kerners talk show on gender roles. There, Kerner and the historian Wolfgang Wippermann , who was invited as an expert , mainly dealt with their controversial statements. After 53 minutes, Kerner asked Herman to leave the show. With 2.65 million (18.1%) viewers, it had the highest audience rating of 2007. It triggered a broad public discussion, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of views of the broadcast, tens of thousands of letters to the ZDF and many daily newspapers as well as many new forums and blogs set up on the topic on the World Wide Web .

Meanwhile, Herman found applause and support from the right-wing political spectrum. After her dismissal by the NDR, the Ring Nationaler Frauen , the women's organization of the right-wing extremist NPD , declared that they saw an "almost one hundred percent match" between their own positions on gender roles and those of Hermans. After the Kerner talk show, the German Center Party in Hamburg declared Herman to be the “dream candidate for citizenship”, and the German People's Union (DVU) was planning a demonstration for “freedom of expression for Eva Herman” on October 11, 2007 in Hamburg. Herman demanded a cease and desist from the DVU through her lawyers. Hamburg council representatives prevented the demonstration.

Court judgments

Herman sued from October 4, 2007 against her termination or the termination of the contract by the NDR and demanded damages. She claimed the protection against dismissal applicable to employees . The Hamburg Labor Court did not legally classify Herman as an employee and dismissed her claim altogether. She was also unsuccessful in the appeal before the Hamburg Regional Labor Court , where Herman only sued against the dismissal, but no longer for damages. The revision was not allowed. The Federal Labor Court rejected Herman's complaint against it.

After a court ruling obtained by Herman, the German press agency is no longer allowed to claim that it has said, "If you can't talk about Nazi family values, you can't talk about the highways that were built at that time". Following a warning from Herman's lawyers, the ZDF committed to a cease and desist declaration vis-à-vis Herman not to distribute part of the 2007 annual review, in which Herman was also assigned shortened and meaning-changing statements.

In January 2009, Herman won two lawsuits against Axel Springer AG , whose media reported on their statements in September 2007, at the Cologne Regional Court . In the first trial, the court sentenced the Bild-Zeitung to compensation of 10,000 euros for Franz Josef Wagner's title of Hermans as a “stupid cow”. The headline “Is Eva Herman brown or just stupid?” Of another Bild article, on the other hand, was rated as a permissible expression of opinion. In the second case, the court ruled that the Hamburger Abendblatt had incorrectly quoted Herman on September 7, 2007, and therefore sentenced the publisher to omit the controversial formulations and to correct the alleged quotation that the alleged quotation was not Herman's statement, and 10,000 euros in compensation for Herman. After an appeal hearing on the first case, the Cologne Higher Regional Court increased the compensation for pain and suffering, for which the Axel Springer Verlag had been sued, to 25,000 euros. According to the reasons for the judgment, it was also, but not the only possible, interpretation of Herman's "ambiguous statement", which was presented as a quote. That gave the impression that Herman had highlighted positive things about National Socialism. This factual assertion significantly impaired her personal rights. However, Herman could not blame Springer-Verlag alone for further professional and private effects of this interpretation.

In June 2011, for the general was right to privacy competent VI. Civil Senate of the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) held the appeal for appeal by Axel Springer Verlag and contradicted the judgment of the Higher Regional Court. Personal rights protect against "incorrect, falsified or distorted representations of a statement". This is not the case here, however, since Herman's statement "viewed in the overall context, measured in terms of choice of words, context of thought and thrust" only allows the interpretation "which the defendant ascribed to it."

The Federal Constitutional Court (BVerfG) rejected Herman's complaint against this BGH judgment on November 25, 2012: The decision of the BGH did not violate Herman's fundamental rights. The statements cited by the Hamburger Abendblatt should be viewed in the overall context and represent an expression of opinion. "The complainant, who was unable to express herself unambiguously, must accept the passage at issue as part of the 'battle of opinion'." The European Court of Human Rights dismissed her complaint, however, in December 2018 as inadmissible. Her long-term attempt to present the first press reports on her statements from 2007 and the termination of the NDR as unlawful had thus finally failed.

In April 2016, proceedings against Herman for tax evasion were opened before the Hamburg district court after she had appealed against a criminal order in this regard. Because cheap forming accepting a tax evasion , she was sentenced to a reduced fine on account of their income situation. She had paid the tax debt beforehand.

Activities since 2009

Herman continues to advocate conservative family policy. For example, she appeared on May 16, 2009 at the opening event for the European election campaign of the AUF - Party for Work, Environment and Family and said there: “We have become a society of shrinking, we are shrinking Germans”. Since June 2009 she has been moderating for the web TV of the internet portal familyfair and for K-TV . On July 17th, 2009 she gave a lecture at the Symposium Family Under Pressure at the Alte Oper in Erfurt on love and attachment as the foundation of maternal relationships.

Since 2009, Herman has been writing articles for the website of Kopp Verlag , which also publishes books by her. The publisher publishes and sells right-wing esoteric , borderline and pseudo-scientific , conspiracy-theoretical , right-wing populist and right-wing extremist titles , among other things . From 2010 she worked as a spokesperson and commentator for its internet news. The broadcast was discontinued at the end of 2011.

On July 25, 2010, Herman commented on the accident at the Love Parade 2010 for Kopp Verlag , in which 21 people had died the day before. She criticized the Love Parade as " Sodom and Gomorrah with catastrophic consequences" and as a "huge drug, alcohol and sex orgy" that symbolized the "cultural and spiritual fall of an entire society". She blamed the 1968 movement for this and assumed: “It is possible that completely different powers have intervened here to finally put an end to the shameless hustle and bustle. As for that, one can only breathe a sigh of relief! It is horrific, however, that such a disaster first had to occur. ”Some commentators interpreted and criticized this statement as an indication of a punishment from God, that is, an assignment of blame to victims and visitors.

In 2012, Herman filed for personal bankruptcy after suffering heavy losses on investments in builder models in Leipzig.

In 2013, Herman was the keynote speaker at a conference on the question “Will Europe's peoples be abolished?” Together with Thilo Sarrazin and Peter Scholl-Latour . Hostility to the family, abortion rates and sexual re-education ”. According to the announcement of the organizing right-wing populist magazine Compact , Herman's concerns should be the focus. Herman canceled her participation at short notice out of concern for her safety and the reaction of the media, but addressed the conference participants in an audio message and compared the German family policy with that of Margot Honeckers .

Since 2014, Herman has been commenting on various topics for Russian media, such as the state press organ Voice of Russia and the Russian state broadcaster RT Deutsch . At Andreas Popps Wissensmanufaktur 2014 she accused western mass media of warmongering against Russia and called on their journalists to go on a “lie strike” and switch to “alternative media”. In an essay from August 31, 2015, she advocated the conspiracy theory that “a certain group of people in power in the global financial system” was behind the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 , who wanted to destroy the tradition of the “Christian Occident ”: Europe was “flooded with Africans and Orientals. Our old strength, our Christian culture, faith and tradition are being destroyed ”. The “equalizing euro ” was a “preparatory instrument” for this. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 were also a "trick", but "still more than half of the people in the world believe in this humbug".

Herman was one of the first to sign the “ Joint Declaration 2018 ” initiative launched by Vera Lengsfeld . In its wording, Germany is being damaged by “illegal mass immigration” and solidarity is expressed with peaceful demonstrators who are demonstrating for the restoration of the “constitutional order at the borders of our country”. In addition to Herman, Thilo Sarrazin , Matthias Matussek , Uwe Tellkamp and Henryk M. Broder signed the declaration.

According to research by Bayerischer Rundfunk , Herman spreads her " historical revisionist thinking " mainly via YouTube and Telegram . With that she stands “for a trend within the scene: away from Facebook , towards Telegram”. The messenger service has developed into a popular Facebook alternative in recent years and, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, has become one of the most important ways of spreading false claims about SARS-CoV-2 . Herman reaches 107,000 followers via Telegram (as of May 13, 2020) and mainly shares reports from the “spectrum of 'alternative media'” such as claims about an alleged “ New World Order ”, a “conspiracy myth, resulting in the takeover of power by a global elite is imminent ". Since March 2020, Herman has been criticizing the work of the World Health Organization and the global efforts to find a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, "as an authoritarian, suppressive measure [...] to rule over the entire world population". Herman also fears surveillance through the abolition of cash, as the corona pandemic makes cashless payments more important.

German colony in Canada

Research by Spiegel in July 2020 revealed that Herman, together with her partner Andreas Popp and Frank Eckhardt, is building a colony with hundreds of German right-wing extremists and conspiracy theorists on the Canadian island of Cape Breton . To this end, the participants are offered overpriced properties several times a year on their local “Wissensmanufaktur” seminar site, legal ideas are conveyed and immigration is promoted. Herman and Popp deny their involvement in the project.
