"Ein Herz für Kinder" (actually BILD hilft eV "Ein Herz für Kinder" ) is an aid organization that supports children and families in need in Germany and around the world. The organization supports soup kitchens , children's clinics, kindergartens, schools and sports and educational projects .
History, field of activity and use of donations
The organization was launched in 1978 by the publisher Axel Springer and the Bild newspaper and was originally founded as an action to promote the safety of children in traffic. Above all, the organization fought for safer transport infrastructure, such as more traffic lights and play streets . The characteristic sticker was created, which met with a great response from the population. In the following years, the number of children killed in traffic fell by 90%. At the end of the 1980s the field of activity of “A Heart for Children” was expanded. Since then, in addition to road safety, the association has also been committed to youth welfare, health care , general welfare and hunger relief for children. In addition, environmental protection and culture are promoted.
In cooperation with clinics, the organization enables, for example, foreign children to undergo life-saving operations and therapies which in some cases would not be possible in their home country and helps in war and disaster areas. The organization emphasizes that every cent donated goes directly to the children.
According to the association, about two thirds of the donations go to projects in Germany and one third to projects abroad. The association only supports specific funding projects, so there are no personnel, operating or travel costs. Most employees work on a voluntary basis, which keeps administrative costs low. These are covered by a large donation from Axel Springer SE and interest income.

Transparency and criticism
All expenses are summarized in an annual report. According to the association, this is checked by a tax consultancy firm; the local tax office has confirmed the charitable status.
“A heart for children” does not have a DZI donation seal . The organization justifies this with the high cost of such a seal. Furthermore, guidelines have been imposed on themselves that are stricter than those of the DZI seal. The managing director of the German Central Institute for Social Issues criticizes the fact that the association does not publish any financial reports and therefore it is not clear where the money is going. The association cites here as a justification that particular importance is attached to the protection of the privacy of the people and their fate, which emerged from the report.
In the period from 2007 to 2010, the association received 4.8 million euros more than it spent. It is unclear where the difference went.
According to the Charitywatch , Bild hilft eV paid various costs for SOS Projects in 2007 and 2008 . This would contradict the promise not to assume any personnel and operating costs.
In 2012, the business magazine Capital published a transparency barometer for the 50 largest donation organizations. A heart for children was placed in the penultimate place.
After the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia , Ein Herz für Kinder called for donations. The organization passed on 2 million euros to the support and interest group (FIG) Indonesia . It turned out that this company was run by a Hamburg Hartz IV recipient who had no experience in the field of development aid. It was not until the beginning of 2006 that the construction of houses and boats began. According to an expert opinion by an architect and the FAO, these were inadequate. Research by a picture reporter was not made public. The owner bought a villa with the remaining money and opened a hotel on the Indonesian islands. Bild hilft eV sued and received back 850,000 euros.
Title melody and logo
30th anniversary postage stamp (2008)
The theme song was produced by Jack White and sung in 1979 by Andrea Jürgens , then twelve years old . The song rose to fourth place in the German single charts and was listed in the hit parade for 28 weeks. The campaign became known through the logo with the red heart and the inscription "A heart for children". According to information from Axel Springer AG, 100 million stickers have been distributed since the campaign started.
Patronage and support
The organization is under the patronage of the tabloid Bild and can always find prominent representatives for individual aid projects. Several companies donate part of their income to Ein Herz für Kinder . In addition, auctions by and with celebrities are regularly held on the charity auction platform United Charity , the proceeds of which are donated to Ein Herz für Kinder .
2009 auctioned McFit to Bayern Munich for 1 million euros in favor of A Heart for Children , then this is a game against a part of a Sat.1 graduated casted telecast team.
